Well, it's that time of year again - almost, anyway. Mark this date on your calendar Dec. 12th, 2009. If you are able to make it you will be assured of a fantastic day of Pipes, Tobaccos, catered food, fine spirits and good Friends, not to mention the 2009 North East Regional Pipe Smoking Contest - all hosted by Kaywoodie's own, Bill Feuerbach.

It is truly a day not to miss.

Lou, NY

See below:

It’s that time once again . . .

for the annual gathering of good friends, good stories,
good tobacco and good food

Lou,
What kind of a turn out does this event draw?
I am from the area and would be interested in attending.
Kaywoodie supplies a pipe for the contest, yes?

I would almost sign up if they would send me the pipe in the mail. It would be neat to have a very limited pipe like that.

Hi Sean,
The event typically drawers about 30-35 attendees - I have attended the last two years. With your $25 contest entry fee ($40 after Dec 1st) you will get a Kaywoodie special ed. contest pipe and participation in the sanctioned contest. Bill also delivers wonderfully on the eats complete with a hot buffet of Italian specialties and a few 6' heros. Bill also takes anyone who is interested on a factory tour. It is also a BYO beverage of choice if you like - there is usually a good sampling of spirits as well. If you want I can send you some photos of the last two events that I attended.

If you are from the area you should not pass this day up. You will have a ball!!!

Hope to see you there,

Lou

Eggman,
The pipe is a secret until that day. Minutes before the contest the pipes are selected by the contestants. The pipes are in a pipe sleeve and you don't know the shape or finish until you open it up. Last years pipe was a billiard - thet usually are. Bill made two finishes, brown stained and tanshell. You did not know which one you were getting until you opened up the bag of the one you selected. I was lucky enough to have selected a tanshell! I will attempt to post a picture if I can figure out how to do it.

Sign up and come!

they hand out a set of 'almost' identical pipes with tobacco... give everyone 2 matches... who ever can make it smoke the longest wins.

It's fun.

but it musta been a couple of real real bad drunk pipers in a bar with NO women that came up with the idea.. Laughing

It is otherwise known as a "slow smoke" contest. For an explanation see: http://www.unitedpipeclubs.org/Smoking_Contests.php

It is like puros_bran says, pretty much.

Are you allowed to alternately cover and uncover the bowl with your hand (Venturi or stoking) or is it "hands off"?
