beginning tonite... Hopefully the Yankees got their need for scoring runs out of their system as they scored 18 runs last night against Texas .

Ken, I'm digging out the Dark Plug . Need to get our relievers on track.

These two haven't met since April and the Red Sox are up 1 game in games between eachother so far this year.

GO RED SOX !!!!!

This guy is set to make a ton of money.

After today, he should go to a team in the National League... he hits a monster home-run 440 feet (some are saying 480). He could be a pinch hitter on the side.

If Cleveland can't turn it around by trading deadline, one of the NL teams should go after him.

Since I'm just getting back into smoking pipes, I've sent for samples from many places, all aromatics. Some from the major bulk suppliers like altadis and lane, also quite a few from pipe shops with their own blends. What I've found is the pipe shop custom blends are the bulk tobaccos with an imaginative new name. My favorite tobacco shop closed, but I called the retired gentleman and discussed this with him. After some hemming and hawing he agreed with my observation and stated 75% of the tobacco ...

Joba Chamberlain will make his first "start" in what is known affectionately as the "Joba Experiment". The Yankees will face the Blue Jays and one of, if not, the best starting pitcher in baseball, Roy "Doc" Halladay. Halladay has 5 complete games in 12 starts. You just know the Yankee hitters want to support their budding star, especially in light of the failures of Kennedy and Hughes. To be sure, a game to watch.

Justin Masterson of the Red Sox will make his third start of the season against ...

Then after a loss to the Bosox, Guiardi calls a "closed door" meeting after the game. "They are ashamed at how they they are playing, promply lose today.

Torre would stand up to these ego's, both owners and players.
Maltese Falcon - What am I doing wrong?

I finally tried some Maltese Falcon and am now in the middle of the second 2 oz tin. This is the problem: the first 1/3 bowl is great and I couldn't be happier. Then, it turns bitter and becomes very unpleasant. I've tried everything I could think of: different pipes (even dedicated a new Ruthenberg to it), different times of day, different ambient temperatures, but there wasn't any appreciable difference. Perhaps larger bowls work better, but in the end the bitterness always comes. I do like ...

i know this is an old one but here goes anyway! i am a perique fanatic and with that in mind i would like a discussion on the above topic. i usually ndont like latakia in general though i dont think i have ever tried syrian. Is it really different from cyprian latakia? i find cyprian tastes too much like soap to me. i find that i am wanting a little more from my smokes and i have read that syrian doesnt taste like cyprian. I am a lover of Fillmore and this blend has opened my mind to trying more ...

Crosby Pipes Updated

Hi all, I have updated my site with some new pipes. One in particular is a sandblasted billiard with what is probably the nicest ring grain I have ever accomplished. If you like sandblasts you really should see this pipe.

http://www.crosbypipes.com/sale/1/item.php

Some others in the update are a 3 knuckle bamboo and an interesting full bent Cobra/Horn hybrid of sorts. Feel free to take a look whenever you get a minute.

Thanks

John

jcrosby@crosbypipes.com

www.crosbypipes.com

Blast Aesthetics

As I've re-entered pipe collecting after a long absence, I've grown to appreciate sand blasted pipes in addition to smooth. It seems to me that the surface aesthetics of smooth pipes are much easier to appreciate than blasts in that the natural grain is obvious; the blast finish, on the other hand, results from the intent of the blaster. While I understand that the blaster follows the grain, you see a lot of variation in the depth of the blast as well as the pattern. I think of Cooke's deep blasts ...

BBB for Schulte

I found a pleasant little BBB pipe in an antique store, unsmoked, in its original box and sleeve from D.A. Schulte haberdashers. It's a smallish straight apple with a planed bottom, so it sits flat. I don't think it was ever a high-grade pipe--it might be one of those deals where the maker made the "house brand" for the store--but at $13, the briar was cheaper than a new basket pipe, and it cleaned up pretty well.

Does anyone know roughly how old this pipe might be?
Brothers,

I've got a carved meer that I was a bit sloppy with in lighting, (30+ years ago when I thought using farmer/kitchen matches was the cool way to light a pipe) so the end result is a rather burned looking, black crusted rim of the bowl. As meerschaum is a mineral and I assume won't burn at the temperatures we smoke at, is it just coated with this black "crud" and can it be cleaned/removed without hacking the poor pipe to pieces?

The rest of the outside of the pipe ...

I recently opened a 50 g tin, and as I didn't have a dedicated pipe(s), I had to season one. Doing so ate up approximately 20 g, leaving only the other 30 g for pleasurable smoking. But with only one pipe-I didn't want to use up even more of the tin to season two pipes-I'm only able to smoke that pipe every third day, my minimum for resting a pipe. Thus the repetitive aspect of getting to know a blend by smoking it daily, is not possible.

I got this tin in trade and thus had no other choice, ...
