PostSubject: Roan on Tobacco Flavor Dynamics   Sun Oct 31, 2010 10:17 pm

If you have not seen the recent series of blog posts by Neill Roan, you are in for a real treat. I have not read anything more thought provoking or singularly significant to my ever-evolving understanding of pipe smoking in a long, long time. His hypothesis that the flavor of the mixture in my pipe does not necessarily come from combustion but rather that combustion"...fuels flavor creation by causing the physical and chemical changes that occur in the distillation and condensation processes"* is nothing short of a revelation to me.

Enjoy.

Requisite reading for the contemporary pipeman.

My advice: take the time to go through the blog archives, especially those listed under "classic posts". You will not be disappointed.

For those with a short attention span:

Buy a big pipe and smoke it slow, and it will be yummy.

That about do it, Neill?

I remember this article on flavor dynamics. Neill's articles were something to behold and really invaluable for me as I was new to the hobby. It's a shame Passion for Pipes no longer exists, especially the in depth tobacco posts, there was always something I could take away from his experiences and he had a way of putting you "the reader" in the story. I think one of my favorite posts was titled, "Uncle Sin." Where he assisted his nephew in the finer details of pipe smoking and gifted him a pipe and some tobacco (don't remember what kind), but you felt connected to the story, the setting, the place, and his nephew's story as he was in one of the branches of service (I think Westpoint) and was a recurring guest, if you will, in Neill's blogs.

Just one of the things I enjoy about the hobby, connecting to different individual's stories, and the sense of community it brings.

Yeah, it was prob not the best idea to add on to this post, but I saw the original post by Kap and remembered all the Passionforpipes blogs I used to read and got nostalgic... it was a well though out, clean, blog with lots of great pictures that was a pleasure to read.

And to my understanding he discontinued it, yanking it from cyber space forever, which sounds impossible these days, but I guess it can be done... though, I haven't done an exhaustive search for the content, but if you just plain google it, it is not there.
