PostSubject: Hello from the South   Mon Dec 13, 2010 2:13 am

Hello to all you fine gents (and ladies) on this frosty winters evening! I just stumbled across this site a few days ago and thought I'd register. I'm relatively new to the world of pipe smoking, but seem to have slipped down the rabbit hole quickly - just last night I developed an itch and a light rash that I think may be the onset of TAD. As I only own one pipe to experience all this wonderful weed in, I'm sure PAD is soon to follow. The selection at my local tobacconist is a bit sparse, so I'm hoping to expand my understanding and taste here on the board. From what I've seen so far, it looks like there's a lot of knowledge and a lot of friendly discussion to be had.

A bit about me, for anyone wondering: I'm 34, married, and own a small liquor store in Fort Smith, Arkansas (that's in the River Valley, just south of the Ozarks and north of the Ouachitas). I'm a happily reformed ciggy smoker who is just discovering the slow, careful and thoughtful joy that is smoking a pipe. Trying to quit smoking several years back, I threw myself at the mercy of the tobacconist where I used to live, and they set me up with a pipe (a Stanwell 179) and a smattering of tobaccos to try. I had some stumble steps learning to smoke the darn thing, but enjoyed it quite a lot. Unfortunately, the stress of finishing school and raising a family got to me and I put the pipe down and picked the pack back up.

Fast forward to now. I've finished school, relocated and started a business. I've good and quit the sticks for months now, and I need a hobby that I both enjoy and that is slow paced and relaxing. The pipe! Ah ha! I've thrown myself into the frey and there's no going back. There's a lot to learn and more to smoke, and I hope it's a past time that remains as rewarding as it has been the last few months. I've plenty of questions, but I'll post those in a more appropriate spot. I really just wanted to say 'hi' and introduce myself. Happy puffs!

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. It would seem my neck of the woods is well represented here. Cody, you're just across the state.. I get over to Memphis for BBQ a couple times a year. Natch, I went to school in Fayetteville, but had several friends at Hendrix back in the day. Conway's a pretty cool little town.

As to the cigarettes, I'm about 6 months out on quitting and haven't had the slightest desire to go back. I honestly think my rapture with the pipe helped dull the ache, and I do love smelling like good quality pipe smoke rather than the stale stink of cigs. I have to say, after 20 years of smoking, I feel great now, and even started biking to work every day. A pipe in the morning with coffee, one in the afternoon at work and one in the evening. That's the recipe for a delightful day!

As for advice, I plan on taking every advantage of the collective knowledge here, and can hopefully lend my own someday. For the time being, I'll shamlessly point you to my post here. Very Happy

LB, why the heck would you want to eat BBQ in Memphis of all places, that dry rub stuff will kill you as fast as those cigs you were smoking!! Very Happy Very Happy

Get yourself up here to KC for some REAL BBQ. And bring a mess of catfish with you, I never get enough when I am down there.

Oh, and a big welcome to BoB! cheers
