Yup, just like the title says, even though I've smoked a pipe for around 20 years, I've never tried a plug tobacco. I'm thinking it is time. I'm thinking about starting with G.L. Pease Jackknife Plug. What else should I consider?

I tend to like aromatics, but like everyone else I don't like the tendency to bite. If it is an aro (do they even make aromatic plugs) I prefer vanilla or liquor based (esp. Frangelico or Amaretto). Caramels, nutty flavors, and chocolates are fine too.

I really like a nice English. Love Latakia, I'm a fan of VAs and Burleys. Not a big fan of Perique though.

So, any ideas?

A good, easily obtained plug is Petersonīs 3Pīs. It comes fairly moist, and is easy to cut to prepare.

Flavor wise itīs quite mild with a fruity topping. I think it is a great introductory sampling to plug tobacco. Both for itīs price and relatively accessible smoking characteristics. Itīs usually in stock at most etailers as well.

I have 3 tins of Jacknife but wont get them until summer so I canīt comment on them yet. Some of the other plugs and ropes from G&H, for example, can be extremely strong and might turn you off to the whole genre.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have never tried a Peterson's tobacco, but I love their pipes (not that that means anything with tobaccos, but I'd love to try them and like them). A mildly topped tobacco should be fine, I like my English blends, and I like my aromatics.

As for the G&H blends being strong, probably not a problem. I don't mind a strong tobacco (I've been smoking pipes for over 19 years, cigars for 18). I'll just have to give both a try when I can find some Jackknife.
