PostSubject: New Member - Maryland   Wed May 25, 2011 5:51 pm

I just joined this forum, it looks very active and all encompassing in the pipe world. I live in Western Maryland with my wife, Westie "Ellie" and
Green-cheek conure "Stevie". I recently switched to pipes from cigars
and can't be enjoying myself more. This forum has good vibe to it that
was immediately appealing.

I've smoked cigars for about 15
years, but my wife never appreciated the habit. So, that cut into my
smoking considerably as I enjoy spending time with her. On vacation in April, we were in a hotel with a pipe smoker who seemed to be enjoying his frequent, short smokes (nearly impossible with a good cigar) My wife suggested the pipe smoke was far better than cigars and her grandfather always smoked a pipe. When we returned home to Maryland,
I started doing some investigation. My local cigar shop wasn't really
helpful and said that I'd never enjoy pipe smoking. He recommended a
cheap estate pipe to try it out and assured me I'd be back to cigars in
short order (I love the dark, madura wraps..) Without much knowledge, I
bought a $30 estate briar (no-name "Real Briar") on Ebay and some cheap
tobacco. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the experience. The Estate
pipe seems to smoke really well. My wife likes the smell, so I can
smoke peacefully on our patio, yard, etc with her nearby. My neighbors,
who thought my cigars a nuisance, also seem to think pipe smoking is
quaint or something. At any rate, no one complains, that is so
refreshing.

I than discovered that I live 25 miles from JM
Boswell, and have been stopping by once a week for their blends (which
are far better than the cheap bulk tobacco I bought locally..) I just picked up a beautiful craggy top freehand plateau, that smokes wonderfully and just makes me smile. The Boswell folks are just terrific.

I travel a lot for work, all along
the mid-Atlantic area so I'm looking forward to finding the nice pipe
shops. Recommendations in VA/PA/NY/NJ are appreciated.

I bought a Peterson Aran #268 Dublin from Pipes &
Cigars.com in NY. (I actually travel there a lot, will definitely stop
by that shop). It's become my travel pipe, the small bowl is convenient for short smokes and it packs nice in my bag.

On
the personal side, I love motorcycles and own two Triumphs. A '66
old-school chopper (Riff-Raff is on my seat) and an '02 America. I
enjoy Formula 1 and MotoGP racing.

I look forward to getting to know the group and increasing my knowledge of pipe smoking.

Welcome rr. I've only been here a short time but it's a great place to hang out and talk about the passion of pipe smoking.

I look forward to your posts!

Cheers,

RR

Thanks. I just sold an unused Thomas & Thomas rod/J. Ryall reel this evening, supporting my new pipe habit....

Welcome. I'm a cigar convert as well. For the price of a good cigar, I can enjoy a tin of excellent pipe tobacco for many, many nights. I find it MUCH more relaxing as well. (Not to mention the added fun of building a pipe collection)

All very much the appeal to me. I never formed much of a bond with a $15 (or more!) cigar. My pipes already feel like old friends.

Sold a Thomas & Thomas rod and reel for pipes!!!!!! Yikes. I hope you got a fair price for that fine rod. It should be worth a few Castello pipes at least Laughing
Welcome to the group and as for Tobacconists, you are correct, they don't come any better than the Boswell's.

I drove a hard bargain with a nice fellow from Colorado. It will shortly be properly used to land some nice, high mountain brookies. He promised pictures.

Welcome to BoB! That was an awesome story of your conversion. You're very lucky to live near Boswell's, that's one of the best in the U.S. Exclamation

Hello,

Western Maryland you say. We used to have friends that lived in Frostburg, and would go up to visit them. Very pretty area.

I'm an hour East in Hagerstown, not quite the mountains of Frostburg. I used to fish there quite a bit.

Yes, I remember Hagerstown. Where we'd finally get off the long drive up I-81 and make our cut west going, "whew, almost there."
