| I was trying to find the difference between a cyclone and a tornado and came across this site. Thought you might find it interesting for other curious comparisons. http://www.differencebetween.net/science/nature/differences-between-cyclone-and-tornado/ |

| The Dust Devil is a small cyclone we get out in the southwestern states- they ususally are good at finding picnics and any outdoor gathering in AZ.... sends everything flying. Not to be confused with the Dust Devil hand vacuum cleaner. I looked at the Great Cyclone article. Perhaps the difference in the terminoligy is more indicative of the vocabulary of the time (late 1800´s) than a scientific distinction. Words like rapacious, or connundrum, for example, were common wheras today they sound antiquated. Just guessing though... |

| Talk about apples and oranges. Cyclones and typhoons are hurricanes.
I once saw a water spout form over Lake Pontchartrain. I was sittin' on my deck smokin' a cigar. I watched it for about fifteen minutes. It broke apart when it hit the south shore near Irish Bayou.

| I thought it was a hurricane in the Atlantic and a typhoon if it was in the Pacific. And that a tornado was an on land funnel cloud and a cyclone was one a sea.
Can't we just call everything marklar. |

What do you mean "just" storms? These are blood thirsty, killer weather events people! Weather with a vendetta against poor, innocent folks! Disclaimer: I in no way mean to make light of those who experienced the recent weather related disasters. In fact, a good friend that I play in a band with chose the wrong time to go to Missouri pick up a 1960 Cadillac. He called me a day after the tornadoes hit, and he was about 200 miles from Joplin. I think he's OK, but it must have been quite a ride. |
