PostSubject: Smoke Eater/Air Purifiers Recommendations?   Sat Apr 26, 2008 3:24 pm

Hi Folks,

I'd like to buy a nice air purifier for my house.I've been looking at
Alpine's on e-bay and some other brands too.Can anyone recommend a
good high quality air cleaner?...

Most of the nicer ones that I've seen seem to be between $100-$300....

Best,
D.J.

Dock,

I have a Hunter brand that does a good job but there is a guy in our club that has one that is awesome! Don't purchase one until I find out what brand it is and send you the information. It is definitely worth researching.

www.austinair.com

I have two of the Health Mate models,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,big house.

The KEY to air filters is getting one with LOTS of carbon.

My Austins have 15lbs of carbon each.

I have seen carbon filters on the net that are designed for bars and up to 100 smokers. Casinos use carbon filters. They are really not that big.

Avoidance helps too. A window fan pointing OUT in order to expel the smoke to begin with.

Ionic purrifers really don't clean/freshen air.

Also, and this sounds stupid but works. Place a couple of plates with a slice of bread soaked in white vinegar around the house. The bread serves to increase the evaporative surface, getting the vinegar to evaporate sooner. As the vinegar evaporates, it releases an acid that kills odors. Sheesh, as a car dealer you should know. I have had several dealers through the years tell me that the worst odor is when someone commits suicide in their car in long term parking at an airport. The remedy is to place a lug of apples in the car, park it in the sun for days. As the apple rot, they give off the same odor eating acid.

If I had it to do over I would opt for the window fan and some vinegar bread. Buy a new pipe with the money.

However,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the Austins are effective,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

CARBON

CARBON

CARBON

They even take care of the sickening sweet smell of pastries and Walnut.

And another thing,

A good hvac man can install a carbon filter in line with your central heat and air.

You do have heat,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,don't you?

And another thing,

Live indoor plants help clean the air,,,,,,,,,,,the Gore approach.

A black light helps promulgate cannibas.

A venus fly trap serves two purposes. Might be worth your consideration.

That is what I have in my man-cave. An exhaust fan to the outside and it works great. It has two eight inch fans in it that can either bring in fresh air from the outside or blow smoky air out. Or can set it so it does both.

" an exaust fan"

Vive Miguel!

I have heard of "whole house" fans that "turn" a houses complete air "over" in twenty minutes.

DPG,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,think air replacement vs. treatment. Save you some big dough.

Fabrics absorb odors. Carpets/upholstered furniture etc. Occassionally my wife will "spritz" things with a spray bottle of vinegar/water. Hey,,,,,,,,,,,get away from me with that damned thing, woman.

Nothin wrong with a house that smells like a 60's bar. Evil or Very Mad

Thanks Gentleman.... After looking around and listening to your recommedations I've decided to go with an Austin Air. They're about $300- and offer a nice small package that can be hidden easily(these things are'nt real attractive)

Best,
D.J.

Good choice Pastry Guy. You'll like it.

Mine stood up to a seven man smoker and it wasn't just challenged by tobacco smoke. Handled the methane quite well.

Be sure to report back.

During the good weather days try an exaust fan (simple fan pointed outward of an open window) in order to extend filter life.

You can also hook up a $5 timer and cycle it at night.

My filters are five years old and the elements will probably get replaced this fall.

DO try the vinegar thing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,dilute it if the smell annoys you. Wifey strategicaly places one at the intake of the central h/ac unit.

But,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,then again,,,,,,,,,,,,,she loves the smell of a strong lat blend,,,,,,,,,,,,especially Commonwealth. Stout hearted Montana woman!
