PostSubject: Herbal pipe blends?   Mon Jan 09, 2012 4:54 pm

Hello to all. My fiance has me very interested in all her BBC films and series. Throughout some of these shows, the men are smoking their pipes. I have always gravitated towards "things from old" and I think this is why I have become very intrigued with the prospect of smoking a nice pipe. I love to come home and sit in my rocking chair by the wood burning stove and after a stressful day or week, I can see myself smoking my pipe. I keep thinking of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings when him and Frodo are talking at the fork of the caves in the Mines of Moria. However, I do not wish to smoke tobacco. I have been researching online and have found many Native American herbal blends to be the only option, besides various odd sounding, mind altering plant life which I am not interested in either. Does anyone here know of other blends I would be interested in? So far, the whole community of pipe smokers I am seeing online seems to be like one big extended family where you don't have to know someone to be welcome....I like that.

I have been researching the possibilities of native American smoking mixtures (Kinnikinnick). I remember one from 50 years ago that was excellent. However I can not find it. I have tried Herbal Smokes but the one I purchased was not good. It was very fine parrticle size and had red willow in it. That is a psychoactive bark that I did not want. Good luck and let us know if you find a good one.

thanks lone red. yes and the kinnick kinnick seems to be of different blends depending on whose making it. I see that a lot of them have mullein and sage in them. I know that both of these herbs are good and not psycho active. I did have my reserves about the bark though. not only about the mind altering properties it may have but also, how good could it be to smoke BARK? I understand its they under-layers but still......yikes. I found these herbal blends on a website...it sounds good:
http://www.grandfathersspirit.com/Mishma-Pipe-Mix.html
also
http://www.thepracticalherbalist.com/recipes/remedies/151-hebal-smoking-blend-a-recipe.html
also this but its out of stock & it does not list the ingredients
http://naturalmagickshop.com/smokes/Peace-Pipe-Smoking-Blend.html

Do herbal blends need the correct moisture content also to smoke well?

I was reading that the best herbal blends to get are whole leaf so as to retain the essential oils. I would also think it would help the blend to retain the correct moisture content for longer also.

Thanks for the web sites OSYH, Looking at the mixtures I wounder about the catnip in Mishma, the lobelia in the peace pipe. The practical herbalists mixture looks interesting. The old mixture I liked was Old Chippewa straight. Great aroma and lots of smoke. It left a clean taste in the mouth. Maybe some one will know if it exists. Happy puffing.

I appreciate this food for thought . Its the reason I joined this forum. I like being able to Ask questions and get everyones opinions. To learn through other peoples mistakes is a very smart thing to do I think.

I remember reading some posts from a BoBer in the UK who smokes herbal blends of his own creation. Can't seem to find the thread right now though, nor can I remember his handle.

Maybe someone else can find it and link it for you.

Cheers,

RR

thank you greatly brewdude. BTW i went out and purchased a corn cob pipe today. I rather enjoy the way it feels even without any smokes in it. It makes me feel more at ease.

Dixie Gun Works in northwest Tennessee has an herbal blend. I tried it about 15 years ago and found it to be OK. You can find it here--
Dixie Gun Works

They also carry some other historical smoking related items and can be found under the "personal items".

You could also give these two blends a try:

Farmers
Honeyblend Herbal Mixture

Honeyrose Farmers Honeyblend Mixture is a blend of mild aromatic herbs which have been matured in honey and fruit juices. The mixture helps to wean you off nicotine by replacing your normal roll-up cigarettes with this tobacco free alternative.

Honeyrose
Special Herbal Mixture (50g Packet)

Honeyrose Special Herbal Mixture is made from a blend of Marshmallow, Red Clover, Rose Petals and other herbs. The mixture has been matured in apple juice for flavour. The mixture helps to wean you off nicotine by replacing your normal roll-up cigarettes with this tobacco free alternative.

Don't know what they are like but they could be an alternative if you don't want the tobacco. Although it is put down here for rollups, I don't see why you couldn't put it in a pipe.

PostSubject: Yerba   Wed May 16, 2012 1:10 pm

I have not been able to find a satisfactory blend, yet. Many years ago, when living in the wilderness, I smoked either Yerba Buena, or Yerba Santa, or a blend. I have tried other non-tobacco smoke, or blends, but have forgotten them.

Looking into Grandfathers Spirit, at present, after too much time wasted directed mostly to phony "legal buds".

PostSubject: Found Herbal Blends   Tue Oct 07, 2014 10:45 am

There is a pipe seller at http://www.flogglewerks.com that specializes in wooden churchwarden pipes (as seen in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies). All of their pipes and stands are hand made. I have one pipe and I've ordered more already. They also have herbal pipe blends. There are about 15 different blends to choose from. I haven't tried any yet, but I'm going to get the pipe of the month club membership and they include two herbal blends per month with the subscription. The pipes are relatively inexpensive also. I love mine!! Hope this helps.

**Update** I have bought some herbal blends from www.flogglewerks.com. In the instructions they recommend doing a 3 to 1 mix of tobacco to herbal. I've experimented with a few batches and here's what I've found.

Make sure to crush the herbal blend because it is very course and doesn't pack well otherwise.

If you're going to smoke straight herbal, hydrate it first like you would a dry tobacco. And pick out any chunks of fruit in the blend first.

If you mix it, let the tobacco dry like you normally would (if you need to) but reduce your drying time by 1/4. Mix only what you are going to smoke at that time because there isn't a good way to separate it once mixed.

After the herbal or mix is prepared pack and smoke like normal. The herbal adds a light but pleasant flavor to the tobacco.

This isn't something I would do all the time, but its a nice change of pace every once in a while.

Hope this helps.

I knew we had some old tokers on here. I was wondering when they would weigh in.

All kidding aside, the herbal smoking wasn't bad, just different. Not something I would do all the time. And definitely wouldn't go without mixing it.

Take it for what you will. I'm just trying to answer some questions and help a brother out.

Hahahahahahaha!!! I didn't mean age old. I meant back in the day. Hell I'm am old clove smoker and I'm only 33. I don't consider anyone on this site old unless they see themselves that way. I'm never going to get old. You have to grow up first.
