PostSubject: My weekend hike with my boy.   Mon Jan 23, 2012 1:56 pm

Just wanted to share this.

The other day, I took the boy (9 yrs old) up on the mountain, out back here.
(He is in 4-h, and besides pigs and horses, he has Hiking as a project)

So, I took him way up, to an area we have never been to, and we zig zagged quite a bit.
LOL, so we were standing by this dead old tree, in a clearing, on a steep slope, where we could see the highway below, and one of our horse pastures.
(So this was a good landmark, that he could see from below)

So I says " hey, you got your pocketknife on ya ?" Twisted Evil LOL, he gives it to me, and I stuck it in the tree, then I stuck mine in the tree.
Then I told him, you need to pay attention to where you are, cuz we are leaving these up here,,, and in a week or two, YOU are going to have to find our way back, to get our knives, and I dont care how long it takes, its all YOU.

LOL, his jaw dropped, he looks at me and says,, " dangit, I shoulda brought one of my other knifes."

But, I tell ya, he started lookin around, gettin landmarks in his head.
I'm thinking the next trip up, might be a long day.

I better take along ALOT of tobacco LOL

That's fantastic! Good on ya Dusty. That kid is really going to learn to appreciate being a man of the wilderness thanks to you. That is, if he ever wants his knife back. Wink

That's hilarious.

Any concern about someone else finding the knives be for he does? We have few proper "woods" or treed-forests out here in Nevadaland, so what little there is seems to attract folks, so I find it interesting you can develop a lesson like that.

...and what a lesson. Never a bad idea to know where you are--without devices. Cool

Here in NC, if you head to the Blue Ridge there are more trees than you can shake a stick at! LOL

Love this Dusty! I do something similar with my boys (6 and 4). Mostly, I just make them find their way back to the house or the truck when we're out on little hikes in the woods. It's fun to see them working things out in their head when they get a little confused. Just the other day we were out and had a little tracking lesson. Fresh snow with lots of deer, elk, rabbit, squirrel, and even our dog tracks for them to follow around. Tons of fun that's for sure.
