PostSubject: New and Here to Learn   Wed Jan 25, 2012 11:30 pm

Hello fella's. I've been enjoying the occasional tobacco product for alittle over ayear now. Cigars maybe ounce to twice a month (sometimes more in the summer, prefer not to smoke at all in my home) Chewing tobcco about the same, NEVER cigerettes though. Grew up in a strong non smoking household. After a lot of research i decided to give it a try and loved it. Some statistics still scare me but only live ounce I suppose. when asked if I smokee I say no and correct them by saying I enjoy a tobacco product once and a again because I and not addicted, I will correct them once more if they say I smoke. I haven't successfully enjoyed a bowl yet, d***ed thing kept going out after each puff, Sad I read and read and still havn't figuredit out. But thats where you guys comein.

Enough of the rambling fella's. I'm here to learn and enjoy as I see a majority of you are. I've also noticed that I am a young'n one this board. Glad tto be here.

Steak and kidney are nice

The pipe not staying lit could be from a number of reasons:
1. The moistness of the tobacco - if its too moist then it will not stay lit. If this is the case then take a small amount and put it an a sheet of paper in the open air to drive off some of the moisture.
2. The tightness of the pack - if the pack is too tight then there wont be sufficient airflow through the pipe. Conversly too loose it will light but will burn hotter. Getting the pack right will take practice though.

Hope this helps

Dusty- Its a smooth briar I picked up for 20$ at my local cigar and pipe shop, the only marking it has is "Italy" on the underside of the bowl. I took the carbonized coating out of the bowl last night night and enjoyed my first real pipe tobacco. A bulk blend that my tobacconist said was his best seller. Then tried a half bowl of captain black white. I packed and lit and it went out. Then took it all out and repacked a bit loosely and it stayed lit longer so I might have it now. As for the flavors, It might be becUse I have only smoked cigars but it seemed a little bland, didnt really peak my interest, no tongue bite as I have read about either wich is good.
So my question is that I only smoke two to three times a month, that might change now that I see I enjoy the ritual of a pipe the same way I do my cigars, so is there a more medium bodied aromatic that I may like? And any suggestions on packing? I should also say that I did not dry my tobacco. But I will try it next time. I also poked my tobacco when it did go out, wich was often, with my pocket knife and that also seemed to help.

Read through the boards here, and you'll be sure to pick up a lot of valuable tips...remember though, as much as any other hobby - and more so than most - pipe smoking is something that is best learned by doing and trying, not by studying and analyzing.

I now realize this. So far I have spent countless hours reading about keeping lit, packing and lighting and still have issues. I guess like everything else, practice is the key. Thanks everyone.

Keeping the pipe lit is kind of like the old adage about boiling water--once you stop fussin' over it, it seems to work out just fine. Laughing It ain't the holy grail of pipe smoking, but lot of new guys seem to think since cigarettes and cigars keep lit plenty well, pipes should, too. It's a nice feature when they do stay lit, but really, don't trouble yourself so much with it. Rather, start gettin' PAD and TAD and trying pipe shapes and tobacco out while refining you packing, tamping and puffin' skills first. The rest falls in line. Cool

Rambling: it's what we do here. Cool
