PostSubject: Replacement Stems   Fri Feb 17, 2012 12:24 pm

I don't smoke cobs all that often, but I do have two that i've had for a few years, and they've had their share of use. The stems are getting to be in pretty rough shape, and in need of replacement.

For those of you cob smokers out there, what's the best way to go about this? Both are MMs, though I'm not sure what model (the sticker on the bottom doesn't give a model name, and it's been about six years since I bought them and I can't really remember what they were). I've looked at MMs website, and none of the pipe models they list look completely They're the same...both look like the "General" or "MacArthur," but without the chimney stack (bowl is more "standard" in size). Neither uses a filter. Is it safe to assume that this is what I need ?

Are you asking for a stem replacement? I'd get a "Forever Stem" from Walker Briar Works. My General has a hardwood plug, no sticker, so I assume yours isn't a General. Will your pipes accept a filter, or were they designed without? You need to know, because the stems from WBW are different. Or you could just get some cheapos from MM. In my experience, they are improved if you remove the flashing, if any, and smooth them up a bit. Or, in my case, I found an old vulcanite stem I had that fit perfectly.

Go check out their site to see which cobs you have, and then buy your bits from them or from Mars.

+1 for forever stems. If you use the same model all the time, all you really need is one, and it's truly "forever."

BTW, all MM cobs now come with acrylic bits, which do seem more durable. With the change came a doubling of their cost to 50 cents each from the factory. Still a bargain, IMNSHO.

Call me crazy, I rather like the feel of the original stems on the cobs. Unless it's a freehand, I'll likely keep using the increased-priced, outrageously expensive fifty-cent originals. Laughing Cool
