PostSubject: Out Your Nose   Wed Feb 22, 2012 9:31 pm

I have smoked pipes and cigars for years and have always drawn the smoke into my mouth and forced the smoke through my sinus's and out my nose. Only recently have I realized that not everyone does that. Recently, while smoking pipes with a buddy, I couldn't even get him to try it. He flatly refused saying that his sinus's were too sensitive. I also noticed on some youtube pipe videos that some folks pull it into their mouth and right back out their mouth.
This is the only way (IMHO) to truly experience the flavor and aroma of the tobacco. You have many more sensors in you sinus's than on your tongue.
What do you guys do?

Jeff....

I exhale through my nose everytime I smoke a pipe or a cigar. Maybe not every single draw gets exhaled through the nose but it is standard practice for me...

I also french inhale if I want to get a true idea of what a blend really tastes like

It's funny. Just the other day the same thing that you experienced happened to me. I was smoking with friends that haven been at it much longer than I and they could not believe I was exhaling out of my nose

I have never exhaled thru the nose whatcha is the technique. Do you take the smoke into your lungs first?

It's done without inhaling. The best way to describe it is to draw the smoke into your mouth then close your mouth and move your tongue forward to fill the cavity of your mouth. This forces the smoke into your sinus cavity where you exhale it out of your nose. The favors that you get are terriffic and the smoke is not inhaled.
It sounds somewhat cumbersome to describe but it is quite natural once you get the hang of it.

Exactly. Try it, Cigar2you. I think you'll agree that it gives a little extra perspective on any given blend.

I don't want to overcomplicate things but when I already have air in my lungs I will draw on the pipe and fill my mouth with smoke. Then i simply close my mouth and exhale the air (not smoke) from my lungs out of my nose and it effectively "carrys" the smoke from my mouth out with it. Does that make sense?

Interesting topic. With most tobaccos, it requires a little effort for me to exhale out my nose. However, with high nic blends, my system automatically exhales out my nose and it takes effort not to.

When I got back into cigars I started seeing references to retrohaling. I had to google it and watch the Youtube vids to realize it is just exhaling through your nose. What a let down!

I'm with you guys who have been doing it as a matter of normal smoking practice since the beginning of time. For pipe and cigar smoke, it is an excellent way to get the full flavor of the smoke, although some can find it irritating to the nasal passages.

Growing up, we invented all sorts of ways to inhale/exhale through your nose (cigarettes back in those days). One that required a good bit of coordination was inhale into your mouth, let the smoke trickle back out of your mouth and inhale in through your nose into your lungs. Those who got good at it could inhale a big drag of smoke in a split second, looking very "cool" in the process.

Same here. Until recently I thought that everyone smoked pipes and cigars that way. I just learned of the term "Snorkling" and have never heard of "Retrohaling". All I know is that it is the best way to enjoy the flavor and aroma of a smoke.

This is what I've always heard called the "French Inhale". Along with breathing out through the nose without inhaling, it's second nature to some, while others can never seem grasp it. (like whistling with your fingers) I like to breath out through my nose occasionally during a bowl, but rarely inhale pipe smoke on purpose.

Yes, that is what we called it. Made for some interesting times as a teenager, if you went up and asked a girl if she could "French" you either got a laugh/demo (as described), a slap across the face, or maybe a fun night ahead! Twisted Evil

The term that I've always heard for inhaling through your nose as the smoke gently rolls from your mouth is "French Inhaling." I also thought that "snorking" was another term for this.

"Retrohaling" is the term that I've always known as sending the smoke from your mouth through your nose. I've got to say, it's pretty cool to see someone release smoke from their mouth and nose simultaneously. People have a draconic look to them when they do this. It's become habit to me. Very Happy

I'll take some videos of myself doing all of the above later and post them for folks to see exactly what it is we're all discussing.

Proto-haling, proto-exhaling, snorking--seems different than the "French Inhale." I used to smoke cigarettes (sad to say) but back then, that's what we did at times. It was a mouthful of smoke, then gently pushed out the mouth with the tongue and caught by inhale with the nostrils.

I "snork" (...a term I learned from Alfredo_Buscatti) with my pipe frequently, which is more catching exhaling breath from the lungs and rather than porting it through the mouth, you kind of chamber a bit of the smoke into your nasal passage and "shoot" it out a little. It's a very subtle maneuver for me, expands the palette and really can open up the flavor and experience in a pipe a lot. I hear cigar guys do this frequently--I kind of discovered it by accident while "breath smoking." I liked it, so I kept doing it. Laughing

Cool

Here's the video! For some reason when I uploaded the video the sound got staggered. Not sure why, but it serves its purpose.

Yep. That's pretty much what Hunter and I were trying to get at. Amazing how hard it can be to explain something in words that we all do all the time. rabbit
