My Pipe Making Blog Empty
PostSubject: My Pipe Making Blog   My Pipe Making Blog EmptyThu Feb 23, 2012 6:22 pm

Hey guys!

As some of you may have noticed, I started a blog to catalogue the processes and thoughts that occur in relationship to making pipes. There's a link at the top of my signature and I'll post in this thread to let everyone know when a new article(?) is up...

Which is now! I just tossed up the first post about my second pipe so please check it out!

You can follow the blog, share it, comment on it, and subscribe to receive e-mail notifications when something new gets posted. Please do them all. Wink

Edit: Oh yeah, here's another link: David Makes a Pipe

Did a major upgrade to my "shop" so I did a quick little blog post about it. Nothing actually major, but feel free to look if you like. Smile

Trust, briar dust is being made! I'll let everyone know as I roll out a few more posts over the next few days concerning progress and a few bumps in the road... Razz

Shelving is good! Now you need to remove that bookcase and put in a big work table and benches for the lathe, sanders, band saw etc.!

How's about a story, hmm? Here's a post about the trials and tribulations of learning how to incorporate power tools into the fold... when you have extremely limited experience with them...

Tales of blood are always a plus. Laughing

Because I have yet to approach a tobacco chamber on the briar chunk you gave me, I'm starting to think how I may go about this. Two reasons: One, I don't have a "vice." It's still the guitar case on a keyboard stand. Which means, even if I manage to hold on to a piece of briar and push it into a clamped, free-spinning bit (which I have now, courtesy Todd Harris...) I'm sure you can see the humor in the whole guitar case flying up and off the stand. Surprised Surprised Surprised

I picked up a versatile vice for pretty cheap at my local hardware store. I just looked online and guess what I found? A nice vice for about $50 less than I paid. scratch

Oh, and the pipe in the picture should be done by the weekend if all goes well. I'll be blogging about it soon! The nice thing is, I've got topics piling up, so there's plenty of fodder for the next week or two of blog posts. Smile

Good. I don't think a minute-by-minute of 85 hours of pipemaking would keep my short attention span for very long. Laughing Razz

Once I have an actual workshop, I'll put together a corner for some tools. Cool

So far so good, can't wait to see the finished product. I know the feeling of briar being ripped out of your hands, and it's not a good one.

Thanks! And it's almost done too. I anticipate another 2 hours or less until I call it done. That'll put me at... drum roll please... 15 hours. Pretty good drop from the first pipe, huh? Wink

I'll be writing a post about the process today and then I'll do another once the pipe is done and ready for display. I'll post here when each of those posts are up. Very Happy

I didn't quite finish the pipe last night but I got pretty close. As such, I decided it was time for some "almost there" photos.

Is the pipe that cracked the one in the most recent pictures up there? That is one delicate shank!

Oh yeah, that's the one that cracked. If you look carefully at pictures 3 and 6 on the blog you can see the cracks on the shank face. If I'd A) drilled the mortise before final shaping or B) stuck to using files to make the stem fit after shaping, I'd have been fine. Le sigh. Oh well, lesson learned.

Last measured, the shank(at its thinnest point) was 7.6 mm high by 8.7 mm wide. The airway is 4 mm. Shocked

That flaw on the shank has been my savior. It doesn't go through to the airway and it's the thinnest point on the shank. I know that as long as the flaw is still there, I'm not at risk of sanding through to the airway. I do hope that it disappears in the last moments of finishing though. I'd be quite pleased if that were the case. Wink

Woahhh! Nice recovery!!! Funny, I was thinking a week or so ago you might just drop a stem into the unbroken part or into the bowl, and well, lookee here! cheers Now I want one done on purpose that way, but with a slightly curved stem! Very Happy That Dunhill was excellent inspiration!

Also, I like how you're keeping the bowls natural-colored. Seriously, awesome, awesome job. I'm seeing a new master in the works. Cool
