PostSubject: They smoke pipes in Idaho?   Mon Feb 27, 2012 12:16 am

Hi all!

Recently converted copenhagen snuff dipper...got tired of the same ol' same ol'. Got interested in smoking pipes but like most of you was turned off by the over the counter drivel. 3 months ago I acquired my first pipe a Dr. Grabow that my wife kindly donated to the local landfill, about 2 months ago. Which by the way, is the perfect bowl size to smoke hunks of montecristo cigars in. (it was better than the dime-store-drivel and I took a whole week enjoying that cigar) I thought that there has to be something better than Borkum Riff Whiskey Tobak. So, I dove head first (the wife says I have obsessions not hobbies) into the supreme and AMAZING online community of pipes and pipe tobaccos and have been loving it.

Lurking in forums and youtube channels, surfing for the elusive, luscious but rare good pipe offering on ebay, searching for bold new american carvers...there's got to be reasonably priced bulky briar daily smokers to be had. Needless to say, I've read far and wide and come up lacking. There is no decent tobacconist in the area from which to gleen advice and direction, smoking is illegal in bars here and seasoned pipe smokers are few and far between. So, I humbly beg of your services, BoB! Please! Help me find MY blend(s) and the pipe(s) to smoke it with.

I know that there is no "holy grail" of briar. That is not my quest. I am merely seeking reasonably priced, no-bling pipes that I can enjoy tasty treats in. A steady, affordable daily smoking blend that won't set a chemical blaze in my cake hole or cause me to run out of butane halfway through a bowl from the fitful number of re-lights.

Forum I need help. I set you to it. You are my last vestige of hope. (over dramatic, a touch?)

Damn, I love this pipe stuff!!

Cheers,
brainitch

Hello and welcome aboard...now I caution you. You'll get plenty of suggestions on reasonably priced/quality stuff, what you WON'T get is advice on how to NOT buy entirely too much and ruin yourself financially anyway...everyone here is an enabler, your wife will not be pleased.

Jus' sayin'..

Welcome, brainitch! Good luck on the quest.

My suggestions:

RE: pipes, get two cobs (Country Gentleman, Spool, or Diplomat) and a mid-sized basket briar. Don't buy any more for 2 or 3 months; by then you should have an idea of what directions you'll want to go in.

RE: tobaccos. Other than using a pipe for a cigar holder, you haven't said why types you like, although it seems you might want to stay away from aromatics. http://www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/bulk/ will sell by the ounce. Get 4-6 very different tobaccos and smoke through them.

My suggestions of what to choose from their current bulks-in-stock: Altadis Old Professor; Cornell & Diehl Bayou Morning, Epiphany, Red Odessa, Three Friars; McClelland Cyprian, Oriental Mixture, Red Cake, A.M.Pipe, 9 to 5, PM Pipe; Planta Mild English. Also, if you don't know of this site: http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/ , check them out before ordering and see what appeals to you. PS have you tried Carter Hall or Prince Albert? Many like one or the other, if not both, as a mild change of pace basic pipe tobacco.

Thanks one and all for a shove in the right direction.
One more quick question concerning pipes for specific types of tobacco while I'm trying to figure out what pleases the palate.

How many pipes do I need for trying out tobaccos without getting the flavor of the tobacco homogenized by all the other tobaccos that have been run through it?

Thanks BoB,
~Brainitch

Everyone has a different opinion on this; for me, it would have to be a pretty strongly scented bowl followed by a pretty mild tobacco to ghost. YMMV

PostSubject: A big Thanks   Mon Feb 27, 2012 10:35 pm

Thanks for the hearty welcome! Best welcoming committee I've had in a forum.

You seem like a decent bunch of guys. Just a personal snippet;
I'm on a long slow road to recovery from a motorcycle accident that stole my hard fought electrical profession from me, at 43 that's a hard blow. My modest ebay pipes and some good tobak have been a recent breath of fresh air to my day. It gives me a bit of a break to get out of my head and be in the moment. The bottom of the bowl shows up way too soon at times. Just want to thank you for the interaction and feedback. I've been married to the same woman for the past 23 years and she has been a doll throughout this ordeal. But like any man knows that's been married for a while, there are just some things you can't or shouldn't share with a spouse. Sometimes the conversation with the occasional stranger or decent bartender can make a big difference. I try to keep a stiff upper lip and all that, but at times it can be an overwhelming thing to feel that the career I fought so hard for is gone and I find myself starting over at this stage of the game. So, I thank you for being that "stranger's ear" and please bear with me when I wax rhapsodic.

Peace

~Dan

DUDE,

You made it

It's the Jack aka TGO69!

Glad to see you on here. I would give you my endorsement, but that would only result in your getting banned indefinitely.

PostSubject: Outwest Tobacco   Wed Feb 29, 2012 6:40 pm

I've purchased from Gene the owner at outwest a few times and even thought it's a decent B&M, It's like 3 to 4 hrs away. But, I have purchased from his website and joked around with him on the phone. Good people. I am planning a trip to his shop in a few weeks was gonna post a few vids from it on youtube...pipe smoking at The Devils Punch Bowl, Silent City of the Rocks, A Twin Falls by the waterfall in spring of course. Should be a good YOUTUBE series.

No need to fret Brainitch. There are two of us from Boise on here (myself and Dreadgerbil) likewise no need to drive to Pocatello when there is Sturmanís Smoke shop in boise at 10th and Bannock. If you buy one of Sturmanís pipe tobacco mixes (2oz bags found in the first cigar room) find you do not like after a bowl you can exchange the bag for another with no additional cost. They also have a nice selection of cobs, briars, and a varying selection of estate pipes. There is also a nice basket of unfinished Savinellis for half the price of a brand new BC or Pete.

Mr. Sturman, and his son, has really been adding to his pipe tobaccos and related supplies.

Good to see you here. Enjoy.

Been to Sturmans, nice little shop. He set me up with some RLP-6, 1Q, McClellands Oriental Mix, and Coyote Ugly something something...thanks though. There is also a guy in meridian but he has no tins and just 4 or 5 bulks and a couple pipes, but it's something.

thanks for the nod was hoping I'd run into some locals on here...
