This has probably been discussed before, but I ran across it for the first time yesterday and thought I'd give it a try. If you Google "Frank Method" you'll get a three part youtube video on how to do this. Basically, I've been doing the three part method for years with good results, and thought this was probably BS, but figured I'd give it a shot.

I am truly amazed at the difference it made in my smoking experience last evening. I smoked two bowls of different tobacco, in different pipes...the same tobacco I've been smoking recently. The pipe stayed lit better, draws better, and I am tasting more flavor from the tobacco. It has to be due to the more tightly packed "plug" that makes it's way down the bowl as you smoke.

Whatever the case, I'm a believer! It's a bit more trouble to pack this way, but once I did it a couple of times, it became much easier.

Good to know!

I've heard about this method, watched the tutorial for the first time through and through several weeks ago. I tried watching them before but never followed through as I too thought it was just another tall tale, but having watched it in it's entirety I've been meaning to try it.

Thanks for the confirmation that it's not a waste of time.

Hmm. Interesting. That's how I start -- i.e., gravity fed trickle down, but I keep it pretty loose and then neaten up the edges a bit, though not as much as the piper in the video. I'm going to try the video method shown with a few different tobaccos and pipes. Thanks for sharing. After 40 years, I'm sure I'm getting close to the ideal pack.

I'm a convert to this method of packing a pipe also, it works exceptionally well.

I've even started using my cigar torch, as in the video. Mine puts out a very confined flame, so no worries about charring the rim of the bowl. It does fuse the top layer of tobacco together like glue. The method does work...

I've recently tried that method (minus the torch) and it works fine. I'm not quite a convert, but no problems with this method and i'll probably use it again on occasion.

Just curious about your cigar torch. Is it a torch like this?

I've tried the Frank Method and it works pretty darn well. Used on a bowl of Plumcake, I noticed it stayed sweeter longer. 'Course it is similar to my "three pinches of increasing firmness" method usd previously.

Also, Pipes and Tobacco mag carried a feature article on pipe filling techniques in the Fall 2006 issue, which included the Frank method. Whether back issues are available is more than I can tell you.

I think this model is used solely for face combustion...not pipe lighting.
