PostSubject: Please help fight FDA regulation of your local tobacconist!   Mon Apr 16, 2012 11:44 pm

Hey guys, please take a moment to register and sign this petition. If the FDA begins to regulate your local tobacconist, it could have far reaching consequences. This is very important.

The FDA is considering the creation of regulations for the premium cigar industry. These regulations will jeopardize over 85,000 American jobs, destroy America’s “mom & pop” premium cigar retailers & manufacturers, and risk over 250,000 jobs in Latin American that produce cigars, impacting the economic/political stability in the region. If the FDA does gain control of our industry, it may very well be the end of the cigar business as we know it.

I strongly encourage you to take action by signing the petition to the Obama Administration. Simply click the link below-

Thanks for chipping in your signature guys! We all need to stand together on this, because most brick and mortar tobacconists couldn't survive on pipe and pipe tobacco sales alone. It takes a volume of cigar sales to keep their heads above water and keep them in business!

anybody know how to find the actual FDA proposals? obviously this petition is worded to get signatures. i can't imagine that regulating the high end cigar biz is in anybody's best interest. but i'd like to make my own decisions based on the actual data. but i cannot find the original materials.

googling some more....

[grrr - i'm not allowed to post external liks apparently 'cuz i'm too new here :-( . perhaps one of you "old timers" coud repost the links without all the spaces i had to add to get around this constraint.]

Thx Dutch.

I was looking for the underlying legalese plus the analysis that led to these claims.

For anybody else who would like some more data...

Here's the text of the "FAMILY SMOKING PREVENTION AND TOBACCO CONTROL AND FEDERAL RETIREMENT REFORM" PUBLIC LAW 111–31 which was signed into law a few years ago: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-111publ31/pdf/PLAW-111publ31.pdf

Here's the bill in the House http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:H.R.1639: and here's the bill in the senate http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:S.1461: that we're effectively petitioning for.

I have been completely unable to find any data to support the claims made in the numerous petitions out there such as the numbers of jobs lost and producers who would go out of business and importers who would stop importing.

That said, the "large cigar" market is clearly not something that children are using as a gateway mechanism to get nicotine (sheesh) and us adults should be able to ingest whatever substances we want.

I have signed the petition, but I'm not impressed with their effort to make a compelling and supported case.

So where are the pipe people in this? Why isn't pipe tobacco being protected?!?!?

Doody.

Thanks Carlos!

When I try to post a link it says "New members are not allowed to post external links or emails for 7 days. Please contact the forum administrator for more information."

I'm considered dangerous until the clock says so ;-) ;-) ;-) . The good news is that I'm patient. Bwahahahahahahah! :-)

Here's a summary of the legislation and what it does straight from the FDA website:

This just in-

CONGRATULATIONS!

25,000 Signatures Reached...Let's Keep Going!

On behalf of the staff and board of directors of Cigar Rights of America (CRA), and the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association (IPCPR) , we would like to extend a sincere 'THANK YOU' for helping reach our goal of 25,000 signatures on the White House petition to protect premium cigars!

Within an astonishing 15 DAYS, the cigar community across the United States came together to voice their opposition to regulation of premium cigars by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Achieving this very important milestone invokes an official response from the White House Administration -- and further establishes the cigar community as a voter constituency.

We Must Keep Going!

Let's not stop with just 25,000 signatures. We must continue to spread the message to all cigar enthusiasts across the United States. The more signatures we have, the more visibility our cause gains!

Please ask your friends to visit http://wh.gov/Qtz and sign the petition today!

Cheers,

RR

Here's an email I received today from Xikar.....

Dear XIKAR Customers and Friends:

The FDA is considering the creation of regulations for the premium cigar industry. These regulations will jeopardize over 85,000 American jobs, destroy America’s “mom & pop” premium cigar retailers & manufacturers, and risk over 250,000 jobs in Latin American that produce cigars, impacting the economic/political stability in the region.

We hope you will stand up for small businesses that dot Main Street America & recognize that premium cigars are enjoyed by adults, are not addictive and therefore do not conform to the Congressional intent of the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act.

Tell the FDA to leave our premium cigars alone. With this nation's more pressing issues, harming my simple ability to enjoy a cigar should not be a priority of the government.

We have done well to get to the minimum 25,000 signatures required, but 25,000 is just that, the minimum. We need to continue our efforts and to talk to our friends about signing the petition. Now is not the time to let up.

Act today with me to protect our rights! SIGN OUR PETITION

Sincerely,

Kurt Van Keppel

President & Founder
