Wow, I am so in love with Broken Flake No. 7. It is such a pleasant smoke and just wanted to thank Blackhorse for the recommendation and Natch for providing a sample. I tried Glengarry Flake today and it is also a great smoke with a lot less of the Lakeland scent than most of the others I have tried, but still has a great tobacco taste and some nice sweetness from the topping. Looking forward to sampling Curly Cut Deluxe next!

If you liked the #7 and Glengarry the Conistion Cut plug is the one you want to focus on. It's perhaps the finest Gawith blend I've ever tried...and just a step above those two in terms of flavor...but the base tobacco comes through much more and is very fine in a robust way.

If you try the Curly Cut Deluxe and find it bitey or thin, let me know and I'll send you some curly cut regular - completely different animal Wink

+1 for the Coniston.

With most of these flowery tobaccos the "Lakeland essence" parts it's curtains rather quickly after lighting. That's when the really amazing flavors start to come out. I remember first trying Glengarry Flake. The first few puffs after lighting were definitely perfumy and I wasn't sure what to make of it. After a bit, though, I stopped noticing it and what's underneath came out. I was hooked after that.

PD - I've always been curious about the curley cut cousins, but have been put off by very mixed reviews. So the regular is like what, compared to the deluxe? And anything else that it is similar to...just so I can get a feel for it?

Deluxe, regular and brown pigtail are all virginia ropes, pigtail being the smallest, deluxe the largest in diameter. Of course deluxe and regular come in pre sliced form. In strength deluxe is the lightest, pigtail the strongest. Pigtail has rope-like flavors but lacks the acrid notes that rope can have. The regular and the pigtail both share some flavor similarities with Dark Birdseye but without the balls Birdseye has. Deluxe is more like a vaper that is light on the perique, tends to bite me personally, and lacks oomph, though the flavor isn't too bad. My fav is the regular, it's an excellent smoke, and the pigtail is quite fine as well, but does require a bit of work and patience. The pigtail retains it's moisture quite well and the little rope stands up well to the elements. If you were going to be travelling about you'd do well to just take along a section of the little pigtail and simply slice up what you need for the following day. I say following day because the little slices really do require some time to dry before smoking. I usually slice a bunch up, jar the slices after a couple of hours of drying, and then again dry what I need for a pipeful for a bit after rubbing a few slices out. Takes a bit of prep and patience and forethought. Very 19th century, no immediate gratification, which is kinda cool.

LOL, yeah Coniston Cut Plug is the one that started it all. That's the blend that I mentioned I liked a few weeks ago and then you recommended the Broken Flake No.7 and the Glengarry. So it seems I have come full circle. Smile

Thanks again,
Scott

LOL - scott. I went back to page one and saw your excellent readout on the various items. Full circle indeed.

PD - the only thing I gotta watch out for is taking ANYTHING written about Gawith stuff on review sites even slightly seriously. Either guys love this one and hate that one or vice versa, so the reviewer says its so strong it'll take paint off or that it has no oomph...a lighter Lakeland or the nursing home pee hiding parfume thing. There are some reviewers that I do trust however...you're one. Not because you're a great taster, or more sensitive or discerning that others (though that may be the case, I don't know) it's just because we seem to have the same tastes. And that's a valuable thing to know about someone. Oh...and Scott...it seems that you're pretty much in the same ballpark as well. Excellent choices!

Hey Guys, thanks for the recommendations. I ordered an ounce each of Glengarry, Coniston Plug, and Rum Flake. Can't wait to try these.

Chris, be sure to report back on the Rum Flake, which is one of the many G&H mixtures I haven't tried yet. You will love Glengarry&Coniston Plug by the way!
