| I used to think the Rum Flake was top of the hill...til I tried the Lousiana Perique Flake. Over the top! And one thing...I really want to hear the reaction to the Coniston Cut Plug and Glengarry. Telling a guy that's never tried 'em that he's gonna love 'em? That's a big risk with a Lakeland, I'm thinkin'. |

| Have you tried C&D's Sunday Picnic? It's a solid VA/Per with the addition of some orientals that make it very tasty. I've been very much into the VA/Per/OR genre recently and REALLY like some that have the added play of Smyrna and others. If done well, they are killer.
Another one of my unsung hidden treasures is C&D's Oriental Silk...very subtle, very good straight smoke...and it's cheap as it's bulk. A 4 oz or larger bag is a crazy good bargain. |

| BD - not to my taste...but you might think so...being so sensitive to it.
And re: the NYPC blend? I think it has Latakia in it, which would spoil it for me. All I would taste would be the Latakia, and the wonderful interplay between the Perique and the Orientals would be lost. I'm sure it's a fine blend, but for me it has one too many component tobaccos. |

No, the one I am talking about (Bedloe's Island) is strictly a Va/Per/OR blend. Here is an excerpt of the description:
"Rounding out the collection is my personal favorite, Bedloe’s Island, a Virginia / Perique / Oriental blend par excellence. This blend benefited the most from the pressing treatment; the difference between our beta samples of the pressed and unpressed are astounding—unpressed, it was a very good blend that had a lot of flavor points, but somehow just fell short of being cohesive; there were a lot of disorganized notes, and some too-tart edges. After pressing, it really became a perfectly orchestrated symphony. In the words of Dan Silverstone, "If the Virginia is a telescope, this is a kaleidoscope!" Of particular note is a hint of allspice—not the desiccated and dull allspice you buy from the grocery store, but allspice trees freshly in bloom; it’s a divine memory of the tropics for me. From the tin: A dramatic merging of bright Virginia with a generous portion of Acadian Perique is invigorated with a measure of Macedonian oriental leaf and presented in a pressed cake. Sweet on the top, it develops into a lush, complex smoke with a savory body and layers of flavor from the oriental component."
Sounds like a tasty blend and one that I can't wait to try!

| Oh YEAH! That's the one I was interested in as well. It does sound good. The allspice flower reference makes me just a bit nervous...but there'll likely be comments on it other than from the makers before I get my mitts on a tin. |

| This thread got me thinking about Lakelands. I delved into them for awhile and never liked the floral note. Having said that, I did enjoy Rum Flake.
With this in mind, aside from Rum Flake, what do you guys think is the tastiest non-floral scented lakeland tobacco?
BTW, please also omit anything with the tonquin. That stuff doesn't agree with me at all.

| The consensus choice seems to be regular curly cut. NOT the deluxe. FWIW |

| Any opinions as to the flavor? The tonquin is vanilla-ee, the rum cake really is sort of cake-ee...what flavors do the enhancements in Curly Cut add?
I was kinda interested in trying the coconut rope, but that seems like it might be a bit too odd... |

| Dark Flake is not floral but vegetal; and it is very dark and very strong, as you might guess:). But there's something in it that reminds me of a cross between a floral and vegetable taste, sort of like steamed cabbage dressed with basil. Now I can hear all the "yechs" being offered up at the memory of tortured episodes from youth when too ardent mothers insisted on serving cabbage. But the comparison holds for me. |

| Curly Cut Regular is not a scented Lakeland, it's a straight Virginia pigtail sold in pre sliced form. It is to striaght Virginia what Dark Birdseye is to Kentucky - a stout unscented tobacco that is smooth, elegant and still has a certain element to it that lets you know it's Lakeland (there are the scented and unscented Lakeland tobaccos, not only the scented ones share certain flavor and aroma profiles). _________________ These are horrible times and all sorts of horrible people are prospering, but we must never let this disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to annoy and hinder them at every turn.

| A fresh eye on the regular birdseye...having tried it for the first time yesterday...absolutely no hint of Lakeland floral or any other scenting. Totally pure and straight...as much as FVF or Kendal Plug (another stellar Gawith) or Bright CR, etc. |
