PostSubject: Match.com discriminates against us   Sat Jun 16, 2012 5:20 am

For those who haven't heard me mention it, I got the short end of a surprise divorce a couple of years ago. Actually, it was 2 years ago this week that my wife of 10 years moved out. I'm not fishing for sympathy, here, just stating the fact so you know my dipping of my toe in the internet dating pool is a new experience for me. I was filling out a profile on match.com this week, which amounts to a job application for the position of New Beau. When it got to the question "Do you smoke?" it only gave the following options:
No way
Yes, but trying to quit
Occasionally
Daily
Cigar aficionado
What gives? No pipe smoking option? It always seemed to me that pipe smoking was seen as a mature and masculine vice, and the ladies usually like the smell. I was thinking that would be a point in my favor. I guess I'll have to make up for it by emphasizing that I'm pretty good with a bo staff or something. Mad

A:points for the napoleon dynamite reference.
2:pop culture still hasnt caught on to our pastime. this is probably a good thing.
D:rule 34 there are no women on the internet.

(win for the movie reference if you get it, no deduction if you dont)

George, as a gentleman, i know you are patient and thoughtful. cigar afficianado should do the trick for a general rule. girls usually find smoke "stinky but tolerable" as long as cigarettes arent the culprit. also, match.com isnt for dating, it is for women who want a husband..... BADLY. the webpage with the creepy old guy in the commercials is even worse.

travel, go to church or whatever, and shop at target. don't wear ipod headphones when out in public, and start conversations with people when you make eye contact. simple stuff. as monbla says, KISS

I thought rule 34 was "If it exists, there's porn of it". And I must have missed an additional movie reference. And I'm not gonna kiss monbla.

37 is porn... 34 is there are no women on the internets... i could be backwards. i have been drinking... Either way, Tits or GTFO

a list labeled A 2 and D is a Home Alone reference. Buzz's Girlfriend....WOOF.

the meat of my comment was below my silliness.

related: i get asked by my female coworkers and wife's friends on a regular basis if i could hook them up with single friends. just saying, a trip to chicago for you?

I've yet to see a survey asking a question about smoking that had a 'pipe' option (there must be some, somewhere!)

Maybe we could start our own dating service. Of course, it would just be a bunch of chubby old guys, and the one new gal, but she's already hitched. Razz

chicago is swimming with single women. it is rediculous, really. and this time of year, most of them don't wear a lot of clothing. a quick weekend to the city might do you good... the air and water show in august is a lot of fun, but an "off" weekend offers cheaper hotel rates and fewer crowds.

Make your best choice in the smoking section but state what you do do in your profile.

Online dating boards are plagued by scammers, especially the casual sex boards. Be very careful, please. The 999 area code number ploy is especially effective; connect to that number and it costs you hundreds of dollars when you thought your new baby was on the end of the line;).

The voice of experience?

FWIW... I met my partner Linda through Lavalife nine years ago. A few of my co-workers also met their SO online.

Linda's daughter has just met a nice fellow (from reports - we haven't met yet) on plentyoffish.com that has lasted a few months now. Apparently match.com rejected her because she said she wasn't christian (or religious - one or the other.)

So online dating can be effective.

Best wishes to you George.

Seriously, guys, thanks for the advice and encouragement. Luckily, I'm in no hurry to find Mrs. Right. I'm still figuring out how to be a pipe-smoking, 40-something bachelor.

Probably because of popular references to 'Smokin a Bowl' or similar phrases meaning something other than what we are doing. Most of the Non Pipe-Smoking population would probably relate the 'Pipe' option to tobacco a little more Homegrown and Green than what we smoke. And so to avoid confusion or mis-interpretation, most surveys will skip that option.

Good point, Rob. The other day I thought I found a new B&M pipe shop in my town. The sign clearly read "Pipes and Pipe Tobacco". They had a few Grabows, some OTC pouches, and a crap-ton of glass and metal "pipes". I think the head shops outnumber tobacconists by at least 4 to 1 around here.

As has been suggested...stay away from that bloody Internet...

Mighty good advice from many...travel, go to church, enter into intelligent conversations, and carry your pipe wherever you go...even if its not lit, the message to others is there. 90+ percent of folks who see me make a comment about the pipe..."oh my Dad/Grandad smoked a pipe and I use to love the smell"...

I even get lots of comments from folks when they see the window sign in my car..."Pipe Smoker on Board".

Good Luck!

...a pipe is to be savored...

Do what I did... Walk into a gas station, and ask about tobacco shops... Works every time... (Don't test it though. If it works stick with it).

I wish you all the luck in internet dating George!

I tried it myself at a point but didn't have much luck. All the guys seemed to be looking for 21-year-old Asian gymnasts not old pipe-smoking hags. Razz

If I looked that good in a uniform, that is ALL I would ever waer....She's a looker.

You could do what my husband did. Pay thousands of dollars to join a dating service. Get set up on a date with a girl who is nothing like what you said you were looking for. Meet her at Joe's Crab Shack for dinner. After sending her on her way after she has eaten an app, dinner, two (YES TWO) desserts and a few drings, you stick around and talk to the servers. At about 11pm there will be a server sitting behind you talking college football with a friend. Turn around and make a comment about how her favorite team sucks and that Nebraska footabll is the best. The rest, as they say, is history. That is really how I met my husband by the way. I thanks God every day for that horrible date (and no, I wasn't the one who waited on them and he called one of the other girls before he called me and she never called him back......great for me Very Happy )
