| Hey everybody, I've been thinking of ordering some different tobaccos off of PipesandCigars.com, but I'm absolutely terrified of how high the duty charges are going to be.
Does anyone know how they're calculated? Or of any Canadian companies that offer the same kind of selection that some of the US companies offer? I'm based in Toronto if that helps any.
Thanks guys!

Duty varies province to province, and is based on weight and value of the product. For example, a 2oz tin with a declared value of $8.00 shipped into British Columbia requires a total of $17 duty. Of course, the same tin would sell at my local B&M (City Cigar, Vancouver, B.C.) for somewhere between $35 and $50; so even with the government taking a piece of the pie, you end up saving.
That said; Canadian Customs seems to be hit and miss. I've been dung on single tins, while orders for several pounds got through with no issues...but either way, there are usually savings over Canadian B&M's. |

| there was another thread that mentioned using the label "candle making supplies" that avoided some duties and holdups at customs. of course, this is questionably legal, so ymmv. Air Freshener/ potpourri seems to be closer to the truth. (my wife would find this ironic) |

| Thanks guys! I got a couple PM's about checking out 4noggins, so I think I will.
And potpourri, that's amazing, haha. I never would've thought of doing something like that! |

A piece of the pie? I am shocked the government does not going into a diabetic shock on such a large slice. OUCH!

| I spoke with one of the guys at Blatter & Blatter (Robert, I think?) the last time I was in Montreal. He acknowledged that the taxes were almost prohibitively high, but they didn't upset him. He was quite happy with what the government provided him in exchange for those taxes. It was an interesting to hear his point of view. |
