I have lots of bamboo around my house and it has got me thinking. Looking at the bamboo around me the only part of the local bamboo's anatomy that looks similar to the pipe stems i have seen is the roots. So is the stem made from bamboo roots or do I just have the wrong type of bamboo?

Great question! I was curious as well, so I did some digging. This is the most reliable source I found.

"Without a doubt, there were pipes made from bamboo well before this, but our focus here is using the roots as an accent for modern briar pipes."

I just had a great idea for a pipe.

Someone good at carving animal figurals, making a two-toned stained briar of a panda sitting and munching bamboo, with a bamboo shank coming out of his back. I bet Downie would do it. For a lot of money. Sad

The biggest problem with bamboo is it possibly splitting if it's not treated correctly...there's also a staggering number of different kinds of bamboo out there, only select few are probably acceptable for pipes.

Cool

I believe it is the roots that are used for pipes.

It's definitely the roots. But like briar wood is the best wood for pipes, I'm sure there's a best kind of bamboo as well. No idea what kind though.

I think I have also seen an inserted metal tube when bamboo was used as a stem.

If metal tubes are inserted and it's all for looks , why does the type of bamboo matter?

Only the finest dead root bamboo should be used. The rest is subpar and deleterious to the smoking experience.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the bamboo really affects the taste of the smoke at all.

It is far enough away from the combustion zone that all it really does is help direct the smoke to your mouth.

The most important aspect of bamboo for pipes is aesthetics. You are looking for uniform knuckles that are fairly close together.

I would think that you could harvest some of the roots, pin them so they do not bend while drying and let them dry to see what happens.

I would love to witness this process, so if you decide to give it a go, please document with pictures.

Bamboo doesn't affect the taste of the pipe while smoked. Take it from my fickle palate and the proud owner of a black bamboo-shank pipe. Cool

(...is it really the bamboo roots that are used for a pipe shank? Shocked I had no idea...those are some pretty roots...no wonder they compliment briar so well...)

Did you know bamboo is in the grass family? It is considered the worlds tallest grass.

OK , so I went on the hunt today. First I tried digging it up , not happening, started digging and after about 30 minutes in the missisippi weather and not a sizable root to be found. So I had an idea. My house is off the ground and the bamboo grows right along the side. I know that in the dark places like that roots grow on top of the soil. Moved some lattice aside and crawled under about ten minutes of cobwebs and I got a good selection of bamboo roots. I have got ten pieces from 3/8" to about 1" wide. They range from 5" to 9" long, except for one piece that is about 2 1/2 feet long.

Pictures will follow, wife is at wallgreens with my camera getting some family pictures developed so as soon as she gets back.

If they're still wet and flexible, pin them down so that they dry straight.

That is fairly decent looking Bamboo. The most desirable Bamboo has Knuckles that are a little closer together, but that stuff isn't too bad.

Well I'm not too interested in keeping it so I am not gonna give a whack at treating it yet, if I need it I will get some more. Had some people PM me and after they are done its free to who ever wants it. Only sending out small quantaties, what will fit in an envelope, and sending it out to whoever wants for free. What ya see is what ya get I'll snip it up into about 5 inch size and mail it in an envelope.

Radice makes my favorite pipes that have bamboo stems:

Well "faux" bamboo at least. It's probably a little easier than working with actual bamboo! Laughing

lol

I've always love the Radice faux pipes. I have one oil cured, twin bore, with the bamboo effect. Looking at the little leaf nodes closely you can see that they used the same tool to drill into the briar to give the effect. Just divide the stem into sections...turn it to create a slight concave profile...then use the drill tool to go around the circumference of the stem, drilling as you go...of something. A guy with a deft hand could easily do the same thing with a half-round Iwasaki Japanese carving file to do the stem shaping and a 1/8" drillbit held in a small Starrett pin vise. That's what I did and it worked pretty well.
