Well first thing, don't bring your pipe lighter. That will be confiscated.
Next, don't bring your pipe tool. That will be confiscated.

Best bet is keep the pipe on you and check everything else. If I'm on a trip I usually have tins of tobac. But lighter, pipe tools all go into a checked bag and don't be surprised if the bag is searched. Lighters are often pocketed so don't take your super nice one and as rough as they are on bags I would not check the pipe.

Just flew from BWI to Orlando and back with my lighter in my carry on without issue last Wed. and returned yesterday . No bag check other than the scanner at security. All of the no lighter signs have been removed as well. Your milage may vary but I am on a plane at least once a month and have had zero lighter issues in a year.

i checked TSA and they say that you are allowed ONE (1) lighter or box of SOTB matches. the only thing you can't have is SAW matches.
i guess i was more concerened with how you packed your leaf for travel. i'm thinking about using wooden cigar tubes or maybe plastic vials. since my travels rarely take me away for more than a few days, a week at the most, i don't need to take a lot with me.

When I'm going to be gone for 1-2 days I carry my 'bac in my old Dunhill leather roll-up in my coat pocket with a few clnrs rolled up with it. Tamper is in pants pocket with change etc. and I usually only take 1 pipe with me as well in a coat pocket. If I'm gone for more than a week, I'll take a tin of 1 blend (50g/2oz) and usually three pipes at most and a bundle of clnrs all packed in my check on luggage. I usually don't smoke whils travelling itself just when I get to my destination. I also DO NOT take ANY of my High grades or favorite smokers as ANYTHING is possible while travelling ! Have done it this way for several years now ( I have to admit, I usually drive most places I go to which simplifies things alot Razz ) and I still have all my pipes and my trusty roll-up Razz

Okay so lighters don't get confiscated any longer in the US or UAE. Also pipe tools, well pipe nails, get through security without hassle. Both go in my pocket and when screening they do through the metal detector. Just dont take a torch lighter because those are a no go.

Tobacco: I keep a couple tins in my carry on bag and a pound or more under the plane. No issues at all.

Makes me glad I don't fly very often. Laughing

Got a swell 5-pipe case, few ziploc baggies full of however many days' worth, and like Monbla said, I don't take the "spendy" pipes (as if I really have any... Laughing) Usually my Harris pipes go with me, and my cobs. Cool

Good to know lighters and pipe tools aren't scrutinized, just in case.

Not true. You cannot fly with torch lighters but traditional butane and Zippo type lighters are fine. I was just in Chicago for work last week. I flew with two pipes, a tin of Old Dublin, my Zippo, one box of cigar shop matches, and my Czech pipe tool. TSA at PHL didn't look at me twice. The folks at O'Hare did search my carry on. He didn't tell me what triggered the search, I think it was looking at the pipe tool, but he did check the Zippo to make sure it wasn't a torch. He was done with the search by the time I had my shoes tied.

When flying, I pack a couple pipes in my Peterson pouch and pack that with pipe accessories in a slightly larger bag with velcro closure I purchased for that purpose, which goes in a corner of my suitcase or carry on along with some tins of tobacco.

Traveling by car, I have a $20 four pistol gun case I got from Overstock.com which holds a dozen pipes and I take along the same velco closure bag for accessories and tins. That gun case is so rugged, I could drop kick it down a flight of stairs, even sit on it, with no worries -- and allows me a nice variety of pipes (even a meer or two) to smoke when away from home for a few days, a week, or more.
