Seems to me a smaller pipe just has a shorter time with the good stuff, I find a larger pipe gets more tobacco to the sweet spot. Small pipes seem to just burn smoky then done.

Kind of like cigars, I like the last inch or 2 the best, a stubby cigar never gets the moist buildup to get the full flavor nor filtration.
