PostSubject: Found a Dr. Grabow cheap at an antique store today   Tue Oct 09, 2012 9:27 pm

Zach and I stopped at this lil antique store in Manistee today to see if they had any racks or vintage pipes. We saw this guy sitting on a shelf in a glass case, very much dirty priced for 15 bucks... we got them to take it down to about half that and I bought it... Zach gave me a hands on "Deep Clean / Restore a pipe" class. Im very proud of this.... sorry I forgot to take before pics....

To make sure we are on the same page:

The stem is acrylic. The tips go in the jar. Wink

A wooden stem is problematic for the end user. One must take great care not to clench unless you want your wooden stem to look like an elementary school Ticonderoga #2.

Nice clean up and grats on the Grabow!

Nice find. I don't think I've ever seen a Grabow with a stem like that.

I've seen all-briar stems (Kaywoodie, I think) with a dual airway at the bit and a little hole right in the middle for the tip of an eye-tooth to clench.

Did/does Grabow even make lucite stems? scratch There's no "spade" logo, so I wonder if that's a re-fit. I have a Jobey with a refitted acrylic stem--folks probably really loved their "basic pipes" enough to bother getting lucite stems put on 'em.

Cool

Kyle, Grbaow bought the old HLT company years ago.Royalton was one of their lines. The lucite stem is standard on this line. One of mine.

That's a fine Royalton, Alex.

Here's a shot of a newer one. Yours has stamping on the RH side of the shank, better grain, better color in the stem, and more of a saddle bit ... you win.

That pipe cleaned up pretty well and the replacement lucite stem is an attractive color for the bowl. Let us know how you like the smoking qualities. Good grab.
