I cant believe this is even being talked about... back when I was a non-smoker I still would have been livid at this suggestion on the grounds that it nannied people and took outrageous control of their lives. Now that I'm a smoker my response would be a fairly sharp two word retort to anyone who thought this was a good idea.

From that dumbass article:
Quote :
One billion people this century are predicted to die from smoking-related diseases,
What a stupid, made-up statistic. Mad

The guys an idiot. He also doesn't recognize that any form of prohibition or rationing leads to a black market. As do high taxes. Look at New York and with similar tax structures.

It would be a nightmare to police and hugely expensive to administer, and would criminalise smokers who would be forced to seek out illegal sources of tobacco if they chose to exceed their licensed allowance."

Prof Chapman though, dismissed this argument as "badly flawed".

"The implication here is that many smokers would be similarly willing to transact with criminals," he wrote in his paper.

"[But] while illicit drugs can only be sourced illegally, tobacco would still be readily obtainable legally.

High taxes such as are levied on cigarettes and RYO are a first step; having to license one's tobacco use would be the next step in policing citizens' habits. As authoritarian as government already is, I don't think world opinion would support this. But it is ominous that this subject has been raised; the formulation of an objective is the first step.

Beware of "well known experts" who want to "address inconsistencies." If this guy is "well known" it must be on some other planet. And there's no need to smooth out inconsistencies. We all live with them every day. At my last checkup this past spring, the doc said, "Jeez, you still have the heart rate and BP of a teenager." I walk, watch my diet and avoid the teevee. I also like my briars, a good hamburger, all baked goods and being at the head of the line while driving. Inconsistent? Doesn't bother me.

Worst thing about this is that we all know this to be foolish and motivated by radical misinformation, misinterpretation, and the use of the word "causation" in the place of "correlation" that is fueling propositions like this but most of the world believes it all to be true. As we're in the minority, I don't think it unlikely that it's just gonna keep getting worse and worse and worse. We may see a day when something as ridiculous as this proposition is reality and no matter what we do or say will stop it. Prohibition ain't far away fellas. Stock up!

There's two ways to pass ridiculum (et al) as fact or knowledge. Repeat it often enough, or make appetizing it enough to be swallowed.

As much as it amazes me that people eat bad food, or food so tricked-up with spices and "flavor lies" to pass as good food, good food is still so rare even when people get a taste. Like believing everything one reads, or even half of it, it becomes a mentality to just "get used to" flavors because it's supposedly better for you. Key point: diet soda. People that are hooked on sugar have an option from the same company that got them hooked.

Politics, ideals, religion, corporate marketing: po-tay-tow...po-taw-tow.

The people just love it.

Cool

Funny (actually NOT), I have had the same feelings that at some point it would come down to this.

The tobacco nazies will stop at nothing. Just this year there was a proposal from some gubberment lackey in our socialist state of WA to make all tobacco illegal - including use, possession, and sales!!!!

Evil or Very Mad

Be vigilant my brothers.........

Cheers,

RR

Fixed it for you. Are you using the 'share' link or the URL? Dont know if it makes a difference really, but I always use the share link, some forums require it.

Prohibition and the "War on Drugs" come immediately to mind. The first allegedly started organized crime (Mafia) and we all know how well the second is doing!
