I was going through an antique store with my wife in Cotton Wood, AZ on a camping trip last week. When a came across a pipe that caught my eye. It is a Ben Wade, Golden Walnut. Good pipe maker right? Any way I paid $8.00 for it and took it home. Out of curiosity I looked it up on eBay. And what do I find, The same pipe, The shape is almost the exact same (I included a pic of the eBay pipe as well). This pipe is listed at $179.00 either this pipe is over priced or I made a great find (I'm thinking great find). Let me know what you think.

and now the eBay pipe:

I know my pipe needs some TLC, But all things considered, it's in really good shape. I thought maybe the rim was damaged, but the eBay pipe is the same way.

That's a super find at the right price. There's a significant collector base out there for Preben Holm and Ben Wade pipes, this particular pipe was probably made by Preben. I suggest you go to eBay and check out the completed auctions check the box on the lower left side of the page to see exactly what prices were realized for a Golden Matt pipe. This should give you a comparative price value. Congrats on a nice Wade.

Yeah, that's a great find. I got my Ben Wade the same way, but I paid $20 for mine if I remember right. Mine smokes terrible, probably the worst gurgle offender I have. It must have been a "friday" pipe. Hopefully yours was made like on a Tuesday or Wednesday Very Happy

She'll buff up nicely too. With a little elbow grease you could make that beauty shine! Man, now I might have to go hit the antique store today....

Nice find!

Brian.

Every time my wife wants to go to an antique store I'm more than happy to go. I'm always looking for pipes and pipe stuff there. There's usually a good chance they don't know what they have.

The antique stores here are awful. It's glorified thrift garbage for ten times the price. I usually find Dr Grabow pipes with stems chewed in half for $50. pale Once in a while I'll find a lighter or some cool old casino ashtray, but it's pathetic around here.

Those of you with sweet finds, enjoy them while they last: people are getting hip to the pipe collectability, and you'll say to yourself, "...man, I never see anything except Dr Grabow pipes with stems chewed in half for $50..." Laughing

Cool

There were three other pipes there. Those three had there stems chewed through. and looked like crap. But behind them, I found this one. persistence counts. I haven't had much luck in Tucson either.

Anywhere there's a significant hipster populous means slim-pickin's in the junk stores. Neutral Kind of sad, but meh. Persistence is pretty key. I have a couple of no-name pipes that I managed to find, but many of them I gave to guys to interest them in pipes.

You guys are in the wrong kind of places, probably. By the time your locales started getting really populated, the old farts who smoked pipes were either starting to vanish, or stayed home.

I live in an area where the snow bird season is now in full swing. Which means we're flooded with golden oldies. And the nearest town is pretty much a retirement only town. Still hard to find good pipes in antique stores.

You just have to hit the shops more often Kyle. I don't think the pipes are there long. I have managed to score several times. Trouble is I sometimes over pay if it is a pipe that I know of but have not been following the prices. I over paid for a GBD Canadian recently. but I am a sucker for Canadians so I will keep and enjoy it. bounce Rolling Eyes

We're not "Mayflower Family States," but gimme a break, Yak. Laughing I think what happened is the casino busses that brought the retirees up from California started pawning their pipes to go to Indian casinos instead. lol!

I think people are snappin' 'em up, and I don't have the time or money to crawl the stores four times a week like I did once. Meh.

I haven't tried any pawn shops. I've found most of my decent pipes at smaller antique shops. The out of the way places, I've even found small antique shops in Phoenix. If I can get a chance I'm also going to start going to flee markets, you never know what you'll find there.

I found the largest Nording I've ever seen at a pawn shop, in fact, the owners were cool enough to call me up and ask me if I was interested... It was $50. I figured, "...what the hell." It was practically unsmoked. I've since passed it on to another guy who can't get enough massive pipes, but...you never know what, when or where pipes or related stuff pop up. Makes the search that much more fun. Granted, I wish I got more encouragement locally but...luck and tenacity and all that.

You folks with antique stores that have pipes should consider yourselves very lucky.

Here in the socialist anti-smoking state of WA one would never find a tobacco pipe. The uber pc nanny hand wringing libs wouldn't approve......

Suspect

No Cheers,

RR
