Just got back from our annual turkey bowl (a pathetic tackle football game with a bunch of 30 year old guys who haven't played a sport since college). Wife's taking a nap to make up for her predawn shopping excursion. Mother-in-law is happily watching the baby. And I am sitting on the porch with a bottle of Winter IPA and a pipeful of this year's Christmas Cheer.

We've got a group of guys that have been getting together since high school for the annual Turkey Bowl. The last of the group will turn 30 next year - based on the post-game hobbling, we've decided the 2013 game will usher in the flag football era.

For Father's Day this year my daughter's school organized a students vs. dads soccer game. Those kids were playing for keeps. I barely made it home after two skinned knees and a sprained ankle. You can bet I was a very "happy father" after that. affraid

There was a push for flags this year but it was vetoed.

As the "old man" on my over-30 hockey team, I'm starting to wish flag hockey was a thing.

I haven't played tackle football in years. At 170lbs, I don't think I want to.

I used to do a lot of that, played defensive end in school. Anymore, however, I'm just too old. Used to be I'd take a hit and bounce back up. Now I only bounce down Laughing

I worked in the shop all day...

Smile I am so happy. Finished a bent brandy that I am very happy with, and got 3/4 of the way done with a big freehand dubliny plateaux pipe. I was going to rusticate it... but as I sanded it is a flawless 360 degree straight grain. Not all of the grain is truly stunning, but its pretty darned good. I am going to stain it brown and the bring it all off so I have a real soft blond with contrast.

So fun when it all works out

rev, sounds like quite a pipe. Maybe you'll post pictures? The Italians seem to have a color code for grain. Say Cavicchi. Light brown stain for fair, amber for good and a honey blond for great. Do they get the last by your technique of sanding off a darker stain?

I am just trying to get the grain to really pop. What will most likely happen is I will screw it up, and then I will need to sand it back down to clean, and in doing so I will sand into a number of flaws and sand pits and that will suck.
