I find it really upsetting, no offense. To hear the story of the radical, revolutionary Jesus, born dirt poor, living amidst the dregs of society, being sung about amidst the temple of consumerism... yeah I just find it very jarring. Not to be a jerk, but I have always struggled with the whole thing.

boooo hisssss rev is a scrooge

I think it's a fitting story to be told anywhere. Everyone needs to hear. Very Happy

Your totally entitled to your opinion though. Laughing

Any place - any time!
Not talking about Rev - just the old, old story.

If Big J was born in April, I hear there's probably less crowds screwing it up for everyone then, anyway.

Corporate Jesus says so. (Brought to you by Twitter). Buy Pepsi. Half off all socks.

one thing most scholars agree on is that Jesus was certainly not born in December

It'd be a damn shame if Jesus was born in December: that'd just get in the way of people's shopping.

Or it's a huge corporate conspiracy.

Yes, the "tending their flocks" passage implies spring. But to make the religion more acceptable to the people in the new lands it was expanding into, their is a certain logic to connecting with (OK, close to!) the winter solstice. santa

Who is this Santa dude, anyway?!?

What surprised me was the reactions of the shoppers. They acted like they'd never seen carolers.

There's more cheer of the holiday variety here on BoB anyway. I may post a tree as an avatar here, as there's no room for one in my cozy flat. I'm spending Christmas with you guys. Make room on the couch.

Glad to be spending Christmas with you, Kyle. Very Happy

Because election season is over. Razz

...I won't be the one who ate all the peanut brittle and drank myself into a drunken stupor on the porch holding a pipe...just drag me in if the snow gets deeper than an inch or two...I'll thaw out.

...or, the Shadow is a little, disgruntled (but giving) elfette, sending her joy and terror in fits of maniacal laughter in the dark...

Yup, at least here it's really obvious - the word for Christmas is Joulu (and Jul in Swedish - Yule, anyone?) and lots of the traditions date back to the times the holiday was celebrated without this baby-in-a-manger stuff - mainly by eating and drinking oneself senseless. Oh, and the name of Santa Claus is nothing sainly here, but Joulupukki - Yule Goat - coming from a traditional character of Yule-time: a scary man wearing goat horns. [/ramble]

My in-laws are all from Swedish and Finnish stock...the first two generations that came over tended to marry predominantly within their Scandinavian culture, so a lot of that has been preserved in our area. Around the holidays, we have a lot of (what I assume to be) the traditional Swedish/Finnish food and drink, decorations, etc. Cool stuff, mostly. That said, the next time I see a sweatshirt with "SISU" across the front, I'm probably going to go insane.
