Not a BoB Member, but a guy I met at a conference.

Every year for the last three years, I've gone to this conference with my wife. It's kind of an art/music conference that inevitably draws out a lot of talented, eclectic people of whom a nice percentage smoke pipe.

I took a bunch of pipes to share for those who may have forgotten to bring a pipe or just never thought about bringing one. We'd get a small crowd of people puffing outside, and would have a wonderful time chatting and smoking.

Well, I made the mistake of letting someone try my Ramses. It was the first Ramses I had ever made, and it was my personal favorite smoker. This guy fell in LOVE with this pipe. He came up to me about an hour and a half later and said, "I want to buy this pipe". Elated, I replied telling him I'd love to make him one. He said, "no, I want to buy THIS pipe." He continued by stating that he had just had the most transcendent smoke he'd ever had, and that he HAD to have that very pipe.

After a while, I told him why I couldn't sell him that pipe. Not only was it my first Ramses, it was kind of a "career" pipe. See, I was buying less than awesome quality wood when I first started making pipes. When I carved the Ramses, someone told me that my choice of wood was holding me back, that my skills weren't be represented well by the wood, so from then on I have only bought the best wood.

So, short story long, David decided to buy a Ramses from me, but I could tell it was going to put a damper on him financially. He was still going to buy it, but that would mean that he'd have to go without airconditioning in his car another year.

I just couldn't do that, so I gave him the pipe. I can't tell you how thrilled he was. I still get letters from him telling me how much he loves smoking it.

Man...I don't regret giving him the pipe at all....but I miss that pipe.

You've never sent me a thing that I know of.. thank you very much.

but your Japanese neighbor has sent two or three boxes, plus that mofo on the other side of town that just squiggle marks his return address has sent some crap.. oh hold it.. I.do think you flipped a bill last year.. I do apologize. But other than that its just been a bunch of Mexicans bombing me.. no name, no return addy. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

thank you mark. Oft times those gifts not only brightened.my day but also my week.

I rigged the Secret Santa some years back.. no not to my benefit.. to my detriment. A new guy on the board had requested shave gear as an alternate to tobacco. Of course I gifted him plenty of tobacco but I also chucked in a Thiers Issard 3/8 straight. Like Growly I don't regret sending the boy a razor, but I do regret sending the boy THAT razor. Of course he disappeared shortly after SS so I really don't even know of he used/uses it. Kinda hard wondering if that blade is sitting unused, in a drawer..

It isn't all that hard to picture Kyle. 20 years from now, just like you are now, only grumpier and a whole lot uglier Laughing

Oh, and you can't see anything without glasses, you don't smell so great, and you forget everything 10 seconds after you remember it. I was gonna write that first but I forgot...... scratch

I'm bad-eyed by birth, had a good 15 years of punk rock lifestyle (and the lack of showering to boot), and I thrive in bliss by choice, so... yeah, pretty much just grumpier and uglier (scary thought). Laughing

Since we're on about age and all, consider yourself lucky in that department. Laughing
