In another forum monbla246, in qualifying his statement about smoking technique, said "FOR ME and MY way of smoking and in MY pipes." I think this kind of comprehensive qualification should be used by anyone anytime that say anything about smoking technique. First, we have the smoker; second, how they smoke; third, the specific pipes used. Change any one or more of these conditions and whatever is being said must change.

I'd add tobacco to your list. Maybe a few other qualifiers -- temp? humidity? . . .

You're welcome to disagree, but I just assume that those qualifiers are always a part of a poster's statement, whether they are stated explicitly or just implied. I prefer to have someone clearly report on his or her own experience, preferably in a cordial, good-humored way. They don't need to sooth me by assuring me that it's only their opinion. Why of course it is. Who else's opinion might it be?

I made my living for 40 years arguing with people. One takeaway is that it's better have someone understand me and disagree with me than vise versa. That's how we learn stuff.

I see what you're saying, but I think there are far too many posts about some aspect of smoking X tobacco in Y pipe in which the poster states something as fact when in fact it he never thinks about these factors and what bearing they might have on his statement.

I think that we smoke pipes because we love the sophistication required to select a pipe, load it, stuff it with tobacco and savor that tobacco's tastes for an extended period of time. Beyond this is the wide open world of opinion. To be exact about what you did to have this take on that experience is often overlooked.

I think the whole pursuit is subjective.

I don't think FVF is the best Virginia on the planet.

I like flakes moist much more than dry.

I think too big a deal is made over breaking in a pipe.

I use a $.99 aluminum tamper.

I can smoke a whole bowl with one light, but why?

Whether canine or briar, I just don't find bulldogs all that attractive.

Rob smokes aros. I think that's cool.

PB smokes pink e-cigs. That's cool, too.

(^Well, only kinda)

I have pipes of all different chamber dimensions that work great for flakes.

Canadian pipes don't have saddle bits. Those are called Lumbermen.

IMVHO...heh.

If everyone did this, we would not get those amazing "truths" about pipe smoking given us by the "masters" that abound here i.e. "... everything has burley in it except yada yada blend " and on and on Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
