Nordic - New Nordic Damascus Knife Empty
PostSubject: New Nordic Damascus Knife   Nordic - New Nordic Damascus Knife EmptyWed Jan 02, 2013 1:13 pm

Here's the latest Nordic knife to come out of the workshop.

It has an AE Damascus blade...made from 1095 and 15N20 steel. Hrc 59- 60. This one is 95mmX25mm. Obtained from BRISA in Finland, the blades are made specifically for them.

Example prior to incorporating into knife:

Nordic - New Nordic Damascus Knife 351m

So - to help you non-decimal people out a bit...the blade is 95mm ( 3 1/2 "). The overall knife is 225mm ( 8 3/4 " ). This one is heavy, with a significant 'presence' in the hand. The blade is razor sharp. All metal fittings on the knife are solid 3/16" brass (the narrower spacers are 3/32"). The main handle material is Columbia Blacktail Deer Antler with Ivory Paper Micarta between the front spacers. Following assembly and final buffing the micarta and antler were oiled with 3 coats of Camelia Oil. The large butt cap is fixed with DevCon Epoxy and sports two 3/16" nickel silver pins.

And standing on it's butt cap (which has an incorporated 'ring' for a split ring/lanyard set-up...or fetish...or whatever.

Nice pattern in the blade Bob. How many layer's. Do you do your own heat treating. What method.

Link to site is above. I can't find a current statement on the number of layers, but I recall seeing it listed as 512 or something like that once upon a time. I got this blade since it was on sale...they put the maker's stamp in the wrong place (compare the photos) and I got it for a really good price. That and I really liked the saber grind on the blade, which I may eventually sharpen.

I have done very little heat treating and tempering. I go as simple and as forgiving as possible. A charcoal bed with final heat from an OxyEthelyene (not Oxy-Ace) torch, until it loses magnetic attraction...hold temp for 5 minutes...then quench in cloved Olive Oil. Then very quickly I draw the temper in my kitchen oven at about 375 F for a half hour and turn it off and let it come to room temperature overnight. Then I do that last step again.

The next one I do I will add the step of using clay on the blade to allow treating of only the edge (which I currently do by only heating that area with the torch).

I've had some blades essentially done, but for the heat and treat as they are 'complicated' and I feared disaster. As I get more confident I'll tackle those. One is a gigantic Damascus dagger...one is a hot forged joining of Siderite (meteorite) and Damascus with a very pronounced upswept Persian design (spine is Siderite and edge is Damascus). I'll get to 'em when I think I can do 'em right.

The antler piece has a slight curve to the right as you look down on the handle. It feels very good in my hand...but for a leftie it would be an awesome, kind of palmswell, grip.

Also, the slight concave 'cutouts' on the antler were put in at a time when I intended to scrim the antler section, which I still may do. Just too lazy at the moment...and I'd like to improve my skills in that area prior to attacking it.
