PostSubject: 1st attmept at a pipe   Sun Jan 06, 2013 3:16 pm

This is my first ever attempt to make a pipe, I don't have all the fancy tools I used a bench top drill press, a delta 6inch/disk 4inch belt combo sander, and hand files, and buffing wheels on a hand drill, the stem is a recycled stem from an estate yelo-bole pipe that the stummel was cracked, I liked the silver ring and wanted to re-use it, plus I don't have everything I need yet to cut tenons, the side walls of the bowl is thinner than I wanted due to the crevice that showed up while I was filing I thought there was a chance it would file out but instead it got larger, I finished the pipe just for practice.

very nice for a first pipe. usually it is a bad idea to chase flaws unless you have a lot of room. Personally I prefer the taper doesn't start at the stummel, but that is a preference I think. The words I heard, "make fifty more" Smile I am at about 18 now

Thanks Rev

I have the second one in my thought stage of planning, I stuffed this one full of half and half and am smoking it now, I heard it was a good tobacco to break a pipe in on, kinda nutty flavored

Great first pipe, for sure. I have heard the poker is a great choice to start with, because it is a pretty easy shape to work with and is forgiving to eyes untrained at proper pipe balance, and you nailed it.

Word on chasing flaws--if you have 'em on a first pipe, like you did on this one, just leave 'em for the sake of "personality." I hope it smokes nicely! You never forget your first one.

Cool

Good to see another up and coming pipe maker, and you're off to a fine start there.
