That's weird. I checked the figures not long ago, and I'm sure heart disease was no 1, and I don't remember tobacco making the top ten at all. Don't know what's happened, maybe I had a bad source.

In the words of Voltaire,

Lies, Damnable Lies, Statistics.

I'm not saying this isn't accurate. I'm just saying my bs meter pegged. What about all the ads that say heart disease is the number one killer?

Damn anti-tobacco zealots!

It appears that they have lumped all the heart disease, cancer (of various types) from anyone who has said they have ever smoked during their lifetime in to that one big 'tobacco use' figure. I would be interested to know if they have included things such as asbestos related deaths in that figure.

I think they meant to exclude "natural causes". If those were included cancer and heart disease would eclipse all others.

The problem is Tobacco is not a cause of death. The CDC's list lumps cancer and heart attack caused by tobacco use with all other deaths caused by heart attack and cancer.

Bar charts are a misleading --albeit visually startling -- way to display information unless the chart divulges what has been rolled up in the bar.
