I recently had an oops with my zippo & blistered the thick urethane finish on the top edge of my bowl. (have since been using my Xikar & Bently pipe lighters more). The original finish was alot more orange looking than the photo shows and thought it was a good excuse for a refinshing job.

Here's the pipe after buffing w/carnuba wax & putting a bit more bend in the stem to allow it to hang with less weight.

Pipe seems to be alot cooler to smoke with the carnuba finsh than it was with the urethane coating. Probably breathes easier.

The original finish was an imperiable one which would have held in the heat more. Wax will allow the briar to breath much better though it will dull with use, but a nice buff with a soft flannel type cloth will bring it back up to a nice patina/sheen. Razz

Monbla256 expained it well & i agree with him. Makes sence that the briar can breath better not being completely sealed.
Also there was a post on the Frank or German method of pipe packing that i've have been doing (less the torch lighter)and found i've had better results with it as it taught me that i was packing my pipes to tight before.(On most of my pipes).

By the way Big Casino nice job on the pipes you've been building. I'm saving to get a pipe from Mark Tinsky in the spring and you've convinced me to get one of his pipe kits then as well. Looks like a fun project.

Peterson's finishes are mighty, unbreathable things. I have two older 80S models that are "wax only" and two that are modern, super-shiny and lacquer (or whatever it is). They smoke differently, but not better one way or the other (naturally hotter/subtler-smoking baccas do better in the wax-finish in my experience).

Your finish made that Pete go from a modern marvel of show-off to a more classic look-- super nice job. Very Happy

Cool

Thanks for the compliments guys, next step is to learn how to rusticate. Kyle is there any chance you'd share your method & what tools/chisels you used on that rustication project you posted.

Thanks for the offer George, yesterday i was messing with my dremel tool on some scrap pieces of hard wood and made nothing but a mess. Today was a alot better, still learning on scrap pieces untill i get a pattern i'm happy with then i'll try it on a $10.00 junk pipe i have.

What bit's do you use the most?
