Admittedly, I should not be buying any more briars, but I was at the base exchange today and saw a simple Dr. Grabow Savoy pipe and the wheels started spinning, furiously!!!

It looks a lot like the Jobey I bought in Plymouth England two years ago, or at least it used to...until I got my grubby paws on it.

Still not done with it, but that's a start. I just couldn't pass up this opportunity. I'm still trying to decide what to do next with it. I've got my wood burning kit on the way so I think I'll accent the ribbon wrapped around the rustication.

Agreed. Wax-polish that sucker and call it good...no staining or further treatment necessary. cheers Better than any Grabow-factory rustication by a long shot.

I think partial rustication can be a tricky maneuver, but one you've negotiated quite nicely.

Thanks guys!

I will take your recommendations and leave it as is, my wife agreed with you. I'll admit to wanting to take my wood burner to outline the ribbon but I'll leave it be, I promise. I'm thinking of giving this pipe to a friend of mine, he's looking for a decent inexpensive briar and if he likes it enough, it's his. I can always do more Cool

I'm having an issue finding carnuba wax on this island though. I was able to find some SC Johnson paste wax, but it's got naptha in it and I'm not keen on using that on a pipe...

Agreed on the Rustication - perfect as is. Don't change a thing.

Damn fine partial Rustication, Brother!

Thank you much!

If I knew there was much interest in pipe refinishing and customizing I would consider adding it to my list of wood working endeavors. I really enjoyed working on that pipe!

After that miserable attempt at carving that first pipe, I felt the need to finish the rustication job on my first Dr. Grabow. That turned out nicely, but in the process I discovered an alternate technique to getting the job done that makes it look partially burnished. Feeling like I had actually accomplished something today, I wanted to try it on an existing pipe, I know yall wanted me to leave this one alone but I couldn't leave well enough alone. Forgive me.

I'm a sucker for straight pipes as well, but I got googly-eyed when I thought of all the things I could do with this one.

Don't tell my wife, but the next Dr Grabow I see that's straight and plain, it's coming home with me Very Happy

Looks good...musta used a hot knife or plate and singe the bits that were stickin' up, from the looks of it. I think it looks great! Now quit muckin' with it and wax-shine the sucker! Laughing

As an artist/musician knowing when to stop is also part of the ordeal--friendly advice. Smile

Cool

It'll be done as soon as the wax goes on, everything else is finished though Cool

Oh hell yeah, I have a small Grabow straight billiard that Chuck sent me a while back, it's 2nd favourite pipe, wish we could get them here in the UK, amazing pipes for the price.
