Rep. Mitch Greenlick, from Portland, is sponsoring a bill that makes cigarettes a Schedule III controlled substance, meaning it would be illegal to possess or distribute cigarettes without a doctor's prescription.

Under the proposal, offenders would face maximum punishments of one year in prison, a $6,250 fine or both.

Other drugs and substances that are considered Schedule III controlled substances are ketamine, lysergic acid and anabolic steroids.

"The State Board of Pharmacy may adopt rules placing requirements and limitations on the sale or transfer of products containing nicotine," the bill's text says.

"I think it's pretty crazy," said Juan Silva of Salem. "I don't see it going through. It's going to be something to watch for, but I don't think it'll pass."

Others see the proposal differently.

"I hope it passes and I hope people actually think about it," said Rick Cannon of Salem. "You know there's less and less smokers everyday because they know how bad it is for them, so I just hope people wake up and realize how bad it actually is for them."

It would also make tomatoes, eggplant, and large amounts of potato controlled substances.

Ridiculous. Pure political theatre.

(Also, LSD is only schedule III in Oregon? Damn Stumptown hippies.)

This is way beyond stupid.
Even if any doctors would be willing
to write prescriptions for cigarettes,
what would they be prescribed to treat?

Infflamation , memory loss, adult ADD, constipation, zits...

Nicotine and other minor tobacco alkaloids are actually extremely beneficial.. Ironically tobacco by itself isn't all that harmful, it's the smoke from combustion and the 'extra' chemicals put in during growing, processing, and packaging.

This portland rep is known for sponsoring legislation with no chance of passing in order to start a discussion about it.

Besides.. obamacares tobacco penilty is going to do the same thing in less than a year... Stock all you want, when you have to pass tobacco tests to get insurance it won't matter.

I can't believe it... There is simply nothing in that bill that aligns with the general republican view of "Less Government". I thoroughly believe in an America that has the right to their own stupidity. I should be free to face the consequences of my own actions. Imagine what this implies of other more benign methods of smoking and tobacco use (I.E. my beloved pipes).

It sounds like a good way for physicians to make a lot of money by charging for office calls just to write prescriptions for people. The bill sponsors probably have a lot of doctors in their families.

While this asinine proposal will undoubtedly be rejected, it's only one more of the opening salvoes that the rabid anti-smoking nazis will be trotting out in their quest to eliminate whatever their nanny tendencies dictate.

Not a year ago there was a bill introduced in WA state that would make all sales, use, trafficking, and possession of any tobacco product a felony!

And no, I'm not BS'ing or exaggerating. There's a thread around here somewhere about that.

Remain vigilant, my brothers.

Cheers,

RR
