Just started making pipes Empty
PostSubject: Just started making pipes   Just started making pipes EmptySun Feb 03, 2013 10:25 pm

Hi, I'm very new to all of this. Quit smoking ciggs and cigars years ago. During Christmas I started craving the wonderful aroma of pipe tobacco. Well I bought some tobacco and sprinkled it in some candles. But that wasn't enough, I started looking at pipes online. Well of course, the next step was how are pipes made. I love working with my hands and carving a pipe really appealed to my artistic side. So I bought some briar and went to work. Just wanted to know what anyone thought. Good or bad, constructive criticism is good. The first 2 pics are of my first pipe. The third pic is my first and second. The second was a reject briar block I bought because it had some pits in it. I was able to work most of them out. The way I bent the stem makes it a very comfortable jaw hanger. These are my first two pipes. I know I have a ways to go and a lot to learn, but I'm having a lot of fun with this new hobby. Thanks in advance for anyones input.

Be careful; you have no idea what an addictive hobby you've stumbled across. Congrats on your first two pipes!

I'm realizing just how addictive it can be. I'm spending so much time researching and looking for better prices and tools. But so far I'm really enjoying it. The first one smokes great. Haven't hit the second one yet. Thanks for the comment.

I really like your first pipe. Wish I had it in my collection. You went the Danes one better with the carving. Good job!

Wow, well I would have said you were doomed the moment you started to crave the aroma of pipe tobacco, but going on that first pipe of yours I should say you have found your way home.

It's a beauty, any chance of some clearer up close shots of that first pipe of yours, it's a fantastic take on the Danish freehand, very well done indeed. Smile

I agree my photographic skills are a bit less than desirable. I'm still trying to get some clearer close ups. I would like to show how great the grain looks in these pipes. Hopefully I can soon figure out a way to get some better shots. Thanks for all of the support.

Nice effort on your first two pipes! The fact that you got them finished, and they are functional probably puts you way ahead of most pipe carvers first effort. Congrats! cheers

As for tobacco, IMO, the best pipe tobacco rarely smells good while it is burning, but you may decide you prefer to stick with aromatic blends.
