For those of you who have been to the DIY boards, I refinished an old favorite of mine and brought it back into service this evening with some Frog Morton Across the Pond.

This poker suffered some battle wounds off the coast of Iran, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia (take your pick); the shellac that Baraccini used had bubbled up one hot evening out on the flight deck of the Gettysburg (seen in my avatar). I was a little more than upset... I thought it was ruined for the most part and stopped using it all together up until I acquired some orange dye and some sandpaper nearly 2 years later.

Lo and behold, after some elbow grease (and a quick buff with some wax), we're back in the saddle!

Previously it had looked like this before it went to war with me:

I've read a few people say these are some relatively cheap pipes, and they are, but I'm not about to trade this one off any time soon. Cool Not after how well it still smokes for me.

Oh and if anyone has more suggestions for a guy who can't seem to get enough FMATP, kindly let me know!

Congrats on the occasion, SWC!

Price doesn't necessarily mean performance in smoking. I have a few OLD Medico pipes that are terrific smokers. Hell - I've got an MM Freehand that is a darn good smoker as well, and it only cost me around $24....

Enjoy your pipe, Sir. Like a fine wine, they get better with age.

As far as the Frog Morton - stock up. Purchase large quantities and cellar them. Some day later you might be glad you did.

It's definitely one of my top 3 favorites. Always seems like it's the 'beater' pipes that tend to grow on you the most Cool

So true. I think it's because the "beaters" travel along on the owner's adventures, while the "good" pipes stay safely at home waiting, so boredom becomes part of them. Remember the song, "Love he one you're with."

Correct-able issues (like airway alternations) aside, I've never found any correlation between a pipe's place in the pecking order and its performance. So much so that most of mine are well-aged, carefully treated old blue-collars.

Glad yours has a happy ending Cool
