A friend of mine in Ontario put me onto Brigham....he said I can't go wrong with one......So I ordered this pipe a while back and had it shipped to another friend in New Mexico...then he shipped it over here to the UK....The postman just brought it today.

Even after all that shipping it was still a very cheap pipe.....beautifully made, very comfortable in the hand and seems to be nice smoker to boot!!!

My Brigham Algonguin 254.....

Handsome pipe. Brian Levine is the US distributor of Brigham pipes and has quite a display to choose from at the pipe shows. Brian also hosts the weekly pipes magazine radio show (podcast) that is thoroughly entertaining. I have to buy one of those Brighams to smoke while listening to the podcast. Let us know how you like the maple wood filter that they use. Congrats on a fine looking briar.

Thanks Doc...I will certainly let you know how I get on with and thanks for the heads up regarding the podcast.....I'll check it out.

I also have an older Brigham Sportsman on the way that I snapped up for pennies.

I hope you enjoy your Brigham -- I have two, a 3-dot prince and a 1-dot Rhodesian. the Prince is a v nice pipe; the Rhodesian might just be the best smoker I've bought since I've restarted (out of about 12 briars)

Thanks so much for the kind words......been smoking it for a couple of days now and it's a beauty.

The fishtail mouthpiece is much more comfortable than a p-lip.

The filters are great...easy to rinse and very quick to dry...I like them a lot.

I had a problem creating a cake in the bottom of the bowl...maybe it's down to the coating but I suspect it was due to a new blend from my local that I picked up ( called The Cube and it's smells like Christmas cake mix) It left a lot of wet dottle in the bottom of the bowl.

Well.I left the baccy out for a while to dry and then packed it now it seems to be creating a cake now.

I smoke a good bit of Mac Barrens Seven Seas and haven't had this problem with wet dottle but leaves a nice white ash.

I welcome any Brothers giving their opinion on this.

Break in that Baby all the way to the bottom. It take quite a few bowls to cake all the way down. This is why I usually break in a pipe with the first 10 smokes only filled about 1/3 of the way and smoke completely down. The tobacco has to be on the dry side, which I prefer or like you said, the moisture prevents you from smoking the bottom. Personally, if it's too wet on the bottom I leave it for the next day!. FWIW.
Sounds like a great pipe, and glad to get the report on the maple filters. I have to get one soon after your recommendation.
cheers

Thanks Doc....that's just as I suspected but it's nice have a Brother confirm it.

Hey Jacob, the dots signify the quality of the briar and workmanship of the finish, here is a key to the series:

1 DOT - "Brigham Standard"
2 DOT - "Brigham Select"
3 DOT (star pattern) - "Brigham Exclusive"
3 DOT (vertically aligned) - "Brigham Executive"
4 DOT - "Brigham Director"
3 DOT (horizontally aligned) - "Brigham VIP"
5 DOT - "Brigham Special Grain"
6 DOT - "Brigham Straight Grain"

This is why a lot of the 1 and 2 dot Brighams have rustication in order to cover up a poor or flawed grain.

There was also "sportsman" model, it was an unfinished pipe, rough cut and for sale at the Ontario Sportsmens Show....they were allegedly only made in 3,4 and 5 dots but I have seen a few with 2 dots....real nice they are too!!
