Good title.

Just a little lower and he would have been a training accident.

cheers

Also, the officer that okay'd that formation for a firing exercise/ceremony should line up, too...

...I think it's possible they were using blanks--there's enough pressure coming from the muzzle when using blanks to knock a hat off and feel like a slap upside the skull...

If they weren't using blanks, line up whoever made that decision, too. Razz

Cool

It would also be a little dangerous for a large group to fire straight up in the air like that several times with live rounds. Those things tend to come back down. Laughing

People have been killed by blank fired in a regular firearm. There are movie guns designed just to fire blanks that do not vent out the barrel. Shooting blanks out of military firearms usually have an adaptor on the end of the barrel to disperse the venting gas. NIKE

Actually, it's unlikely that firing a blank at someone from a distance of a few feet would be fatal. You definitely wouldn't want it pointed at an eye or an ear, even at a distance of a few feet. But in the most famous fatality from a blank (actor Jon-Erik Hexum), he was holding a .44 Magnum directly against his head. The pressure wave punched a hole in his skull and drove the bone fragments into his brain. He was toast.

So, yeah...it's true that there is enormous pressure at the muzzle, but once it escapes into the air the shock wave expands in an approximately spherical wave front, dissipating the energy in an inverse cubic function, so the force falls off very rapidly at distance from the muzzle increases. It's unquestionably lethal right at the muzzle, but probably not at the distance shown in the video.

Still, it was an incredibly stupid idea. Evil or Very Mad

It all depends on how the blank is set up. I've messed around with the "crimped-end" style blanks and the "plugged-end" blanks. The "crimped" blanks are usually just an extension of the brass that holds in the combustion pressure until it cannot any longer, giving a satisfying "pop." Those wouldn't really harm anyone or anything, unless you were blasting a fly off a pie plate. The "plugged-end" blanks seem to have some kind of metal or porcelain "skin" over a vent hole, which finally breaks at some point when the primer ignites the powder, causing the lovely "bang." Someone, an idiot in my past, was firing these at people's rear ends, and I was not a spared target. A projectile about the size of half a lentil lodged itself just below the surface of my skin on my calf. It was one of the plugs, and while it didn't kill me, I was pretty pissed. I can't remember if I socked the guy and took the gun away or slapped him, but something happened, and it was justified. Laughing

I think BBs or pellets from an airgun are more dangerous. That, of course, would depend on the caliber of the blank. Anything is dangerous if used improperly. That's why we need signs to tell us when to cross the street; apparently we aren't smart enough to walk and look for cars simultaneously. Laughing

Oh. Right, pb. The stupidity of some (but not all) military decision-making during war is legendary. But then, war is stupid, so I guess it comes with the territory.

It is the inevitable consequence of any chain-of-command pyramid with the feedback loop disabled.
