Beware of Mr Baker!

No, really-

Just to be clear, Ginger Baker defined what I remember as virtuoso rock drumming in the late 60's. Clearly his solos are legendary. Arguably, he had no peer at the time.

Saw him first with Blind Faith back in '68 at the Midwest Rock Fest at the State County Fair Grounds, West Aliis, WI (missed the initial Cream concerts), and his solo on "Do What You Like" was impressive.

That was back when he was (supposedly) a heroin junkie. Blind Faith were the featured act for later that night, and I remember during the day seeing a couple guys carrying a tall, thin, lanky guy around on their shoulders behind the stage during some other act. Like they were trying to sober someone up!

Guess that might have been Baker. And yet he played his ass off that night. Also remember some article later on that said he felt it was his best solo ever! I can say that after listening to his solos on various Cream albums that I agree!

Finally caught Cream back in '05 at the Royal Albert Hall, London, for their 40th reunion concert on opening night. Baker played the Toad solo, and it was OK but lacked the firey style he had back in the day.

Have the DVD of the concert series, and it's essential viewing for those who were influenced by them. Highly recommended!

Need to see this documentary. Ginger is an icon in rock drumming. Many were influenced by him to this day.

The news links aren't working but I heard the producer on a radio show last year. It does sounds pretty interesting. Ginger has some anger management issues that come out in the film. (he punched the producer during filming....)

This, of course, may have more to do with his advanced age than with any conscious mellowing. Periodically, interviewees pop up to remind us about the time Baker pulled a knife on one of them, or how he introduced his then-15-year-old-son to cocaine. And yes, just when Baker starts to seem almost like a cute senior citizen in a rest home, heíll suddenly bark in annoyance at one of Bulgerís questions, startlingly and for no apparent reason.
But he is a puffer. (even if it is a Falcon.) Wink
