Alas, I am slow to the punch. This man continues to provide me with periodic insight into the human condition and for that I am eternally grateful.

Surprisingly another artist seems to have gone unguessed. But rest assured BC, I would recognize Sailor Jerry anywhere. How can you not? Wink

Hey BigCasino - Here's the blurb on the rivalry between the two famous tattoo artists, Lyle Tuttle & Sailor Jerry, from Wiki:

"When Tuttle was on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in October 1970, Sailor Jerry put the picture inside his toilet". [3][4]

Ouch! Wonder what that was all about?

Yeah, trifecta, thought you'd appreciate this photo. Spent a lot of years in Steinbeck country in Salinas, Castroville, Watsonville, Moss Landing & Monterey in the 80s. Great part of the world there, and I miss it greatly.

Controversial English writer. Arch nemesis of A.A. Milne, another notable pipe smoker, of Winnie the Pooh fame.

It's either a young Harlan Ellison (sci-fi author) or an even younger Johnny Cash. No, wait...the face isn't craggy enough for Johnny, so I'm gonna say it's Harlan...prolly at a book signing, judging by the shelves behind him.

I'd have had to resign from physics if I had missed that one.

Here's another Brit author. Famous. Justly so.

Bingo, PD! cheers

I knew he was a pipe smoker (...although I'm not sure how I knew that; perhaps it was suggested by the film Shadowlands, where Lewis was played by Anthony Hopkins), but it took some doing to find a photo that proved it.

OK...here's another one—and this one is probably way too easy—but I'd be remiss if I didn't include it in a thread of such illustrious pipe smokists:

JRR Tolkien. CS Lewis and fellow novelist Tolkien were close friends. Both authors served on the English faculty at Oxford University, and both were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the "Inklings". Here's a real nice photo of the Father of the Hobbits. Note: Read the smoke rings. Get it?

Yup...I know it well—a superb work. In fact, I plan to read it again soon.

I'm currently devouring William Manchester's The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill...my second time for the first two volumes, which is why much of this stuff is fresh in my mind. The third and final volume (completed by Paul Reid at the request of his mentor, Mr. Manchester, who was unable to finish the work before his death) wasn't published until 2012. November. So, I'm going back to the beginning to get the full flavor of the work before I dive into Volume 3 for the first time.

I swear...the doggone book reads like a novel, and it's all the more gripping because it's actual history. It whitewashes nothing, revealing Churchill and his contemporaries with all their warts, as well as their more positive attributes. The author's research is unimpeachable. In fact, in Volume 2 (Alone 1932-1940) he often cites William L. Shirer, who was a correspondent for Universal News Service and CBS in the prewar years. and remained a CBS correspondent throughout the war.

I must say that it is always a pleasure to find a weed brothah who appreciates the value and importance of history. As George Santayana wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Alas, I haven't found any evidence that Santayana was a pipe smoker.

I have to admit I am a non violence advocating Gandhi ite, but... I loved this book, and loved Churchill because of it Smile

Thank the good Lord above for Winston Churchill. On the hallowed ground of our collective memory he walks.
