Looking for Micarta source. Empty
PostSubject: Looking for Micarta source.    Looking for Micarta source. EmptyTue Mar 19, 2013 12:16 pm

I found it once upon a time, but either it's now OOS or I lost the site and neither Google nor Bing can bring it up again.

Looking for ''Barbed Wire Micarta''. Usually in a black base as far as I know. Anybody out there know where I can find some?

I've got a Bark River North Wind and Tanto that have the barbed wire micarta slabs (ordered 'em as a set from Mike at BR). I love the look and want to find it in blocks (like 1 1/4 X 1 1/4 X 5).

Got a new blade on the way (payment for making a cane) and want a special handle for it. The new blade is a Roselli Carpenter blade in UHC which should be an excellent knife for carving, where a longer blade than my little bear Claw might be needed. The blade is about 3 1/4" long, 3/4" wide, and .120" thick. The tang is about 2 3/8" long. The best price I've ever seen is $75 plus $6 to ship.

The Rockwell hardness rating on this steel is 64+ so you can imagine how it holds an edge. There's also something about both the blade geometry and hardness that lend to the' way' the blade cuts...the feel. I've never found anything to compare.

BH I haven't had any luck tracking this stuff down. My understanding is that it's made of burlap instead of the usual linen. It may be a case of you have to make it yourself. It's not hard just messy, smelly and takes a bit of time! If your interested Let me know.

I've seen the burlap version and like it. What I'm trying to find is black with actual silver colored wire in it. The wire is definitely metal.

Shouldn't be too hard to recreate with black fabric die and my guess would be thin sterling wire set along the outside of the form when you press it. Have you got any pictures of this material? That would be a big help.

I remember seeing good photos of it in an old Bark River thing, either past products on their site or a Knife Forums, etc. I could take pics of my North Wind, etc. but I know that the BR shots will show it more effectively. I'll see what I can find.

Something like this done in thin sterling wire over a black burlap backing?

I think BH means something like what the slip joint in this page has. BH, if I were you I would contact this maker directly and ask. Or, perhaps, you may go to bladeforums.com and ask there.

Yeah, Texas Knife was the first place I looked. They've had it in the past.

Anyway, being at least part Sherlock in spirit I started going through the archives at the Bark River site for the same time frame as when the North Wind was fabricated and got some hits. First off, they called it 'Twisted Wire'. So maybe if I start looking under that name. Oh...and the trade name of the product is 'fibermascus'.

You know, looking at both I might be leaning toward the brown barbed wire pattern. I guess it's made from a burlap base. Very handsome. Some of the forums talk about what a bitch it is to finish.

The photos below are some barkies with the Twisted Wire.

This is a VERY interesting post.

And here is the site for the guy who made the original Twisted Wire Fibermascus for Mike at BR. I think I'm home free.

Nice stuff there BH! As far as problems finishing it I would think a quick pass with a torch would be helpful.

After a liberal application of white gas.

Now there has to be one of those generational indicators. Does anyone born after 1980 even know what white gas is...or that it exists?

My understanding is that white gas is naphtha, which is used as fuel in some camping stoves. That's why I bought it, but it's been a couple of years.

That's the most common usage now days. Way back when you had leaded gasoline white gas was also used to refer to pure gasoline with no additives(tetra ethyl lead).

Re: no kidding? Isn't Coleman Fuel the same thing?

REI likely sells it prepackaged in 6 oz aluminum 'bottles' for $24.95! (backpacking stove fuel)

Thanks Cuervo. I hadn't seen the two vendors before.

But if you look at one of my posts on page one I posted the link to Carter Crafts re making the micarta too. It really is an excellent thread. Thanks.
