PostSubject: PIPES IN YOUR WILL   Tue Apr 23, 2013 3:49 am

Thanks Doc. I think we all agree that the best course of action is to give the pipes to those you want to have them before you kick off this planet. But there will be some of them, plus accessories (lighters, pipe bags, reamers, tampers and such) and surplus tobacco (yay) to disburse...and I'm looking for a name to have my wife send this stuff to for further disbursement. I know that name will change over time, but there could be a "designated place holder" who will accept these "gifts" on behalf of the BoB Leadership. Pipes are a serious thing to me. I believe they have a "soul" that comes from the character of the owners. Their pain, joy, satisfaction and frustration are all wrapped up in that pipe everytime they lite up. With coming legislation and the mindless attempt to regulate what you put in your body, we are slowly becoming future outlaws. I believe it was Kyle who said words to the effect that pipes are temporarily owned until the next owner. They should flow through time. I know my wife will follow through on my wishes as will my executor (choose wisely!) but I need to know...and put on speed dial for the "not familiar with our forum style and makeup" for the folks doing the emailing asking where to send this stuff.

We are all about PIPES! and the character that follows with smoking pipes...the maturity that developes over time. So if that is us, then we need to make provisions for those who cannot speak our language (the pipes). We need to know that there will be an address for them to call home while waiting to be resurrected.

On behalf of the BoB leadership? No. If you want to make arrangements with a specific individual to handle your personal estate property after your demise, that's up to you. But if you think a group of volunteer internet forum moderators should get involved with division of estate property and all the possible legal responsibilities and issues that could come up, hell no. It would only take one surviving family member and his/her attorney to make a claim for all of daddy's valuable old Dunhills that were just wrongly dispersed to forum members and suddenly we are in court because you didn't handle your property properly before hand.

If you want your stuff to go to someone, either give it to them before you die or specifically put it in your will. Don't ask other people to be responsible for your crap.

Didn't mean to piss off PeeDee ("Don't ask other people to be responsible for your crap."). Just wanted to get some direction for gifting pipes and pipe accessories for the future. I'n not asking someone to be responsible for my crap, just looking for a responsible way of distributing my "crap" once I'm gone.

You didn't piss me off, I'm just being blunt when it seems to be called for. Enthusiasm often overtakes reason. This is just a bad idea, the notion of publicly handling estate property. As previously stated, give it away or put it in your will. If you already have a will, amend it to accomodate your pipes. Trust your children to do what you asked them to do with your pipes.

I can just see it now. One member publicly wonders why Ol Fred promised him a certain pipe, but the guy on the forum who Fred sent the pipes to gave it to Earl, who also claimed Fred promised it to him. And on, and on, and on, over some hunks of wood that wouldn't even fetch a hundred bucks on ebay.

Maybe I'm cynical, but this is just a bad idea. Keep your affairs private, and keep them within your family where they belong.

Hey, Fancy Flip-Flops, calm down, would ya? lol!

No, but really, death and property is a specialized form of law, let alone a total debacle much of the time, I wouldn't suggest anyone take that on, law degree or not. It's a fantastic idea to send pipes to the right people, it truly is. It's just one, like I said, that's better off done ahead of time...that way you can deal directly with people of your choosing rather than leaving it up to the courts (or families) and getting someone else involved with a complete mess potential.

Fortunately I have good friends and (for now, while they're around) good family on my better half's side that would go to great lengths to make sure I was taken care of. Still, I'm gonna make sure my pipes are in good hands well before that time. And if I'm still smokin', it'll be cobs. Rob can have those too, if the doesn't mind a lot of dried drool. Laughing

Eff you Kyle, I am calm, can't you tell? Shocked

Honestly, I get the sentiment, and I appreciate it. I like the sentiment behind it. My comments were made with my moderator hat on. FWIW, we smelled this question coming from the commentary in this thread, using the forum as bequesting mediator, and the mod team has so far unanimously said no. It's dangerous ground, that's all.

What the pipe smoking community lacks is a longstanding foundation that raises and distributes funds for the good of pipe smokers. Such entities are first rate estate planners.

Someday, given the chance, and taking the time to follow though. I thought I might try to set up some sort of sale of my junk and a donation to the Northern California DX Foundation. In the ham radio world this is a well known group of individuals that help to make ham radio operations from the rarest of places on this earth possible. Some planning ahead and a eBay sales expert could unload my pipes and no longer available tobacco. Then send a check to the foundation, while those in the foundation unload my ham gear.

So, there are ways to deal with it. Just requires careful planning with those who will be here long after us.

Ham-rad circles are cool dudes, too. After years of MW operation, I figured I oughta get my amateur's license, but never did. Too much stuff always got in the way. Hell if I'd ever use it, anyway, I just like to listen. Laughing

If pipes become a little more popular, who knows what kind of interesting "honor circle" will develop for the good of the pipes that live past their owners (borrowers?)

Cool
