Well I'm been working pretty hard to make some pipes for the Kansas City Show in June, but it seems like I keep running into snags. Yesterday I discovered an pit in a nice little Rhodesian that penetrated the draft hole. About 5 wasted hours of labor.

I did however manage to finish up this pencil shanked Dublin. I was trying to replicate the Dunhill Chestnut finish. How do you guys think I did?

That's really a nice looking pipe. Just love the appearance of the grain especially on the shank. The stain color is perfect. Would love to have one just like it if fitted to use 9mm filters. Great job. Smile

Very, very Dunhil-esque! Is that a black ebonite stem or a very dark Cumberland? Nice, nice piece of work cheers

Good luck at the show! I think you're going to turn more than a few heads with that pipe! I, for one, am in love with that Dublin. Fantastic work and I may cry a little when it gets sold. Wink Crying or Very sad

Thanks guys! This one was a PIA to get right. Pencil shanks leave very little room for error.

@ anj27511 I think a 9mm filter is wider than the shank!

@ monbla The stem is cumberland, but the stuff I have been working with is pretty subtly patterned. I think I like it better than the more dramatic streaks in other types of cumberland.

THAT definitely adds to the Dunhill flavor it has! I'm not a big fan of the Dublin shape ( I only own one) but I'd gladly smoke THAT one ! Nice job Twisted Evil

Geez. Lately I've been seeing straight pipes that have really impressed me. Then even a couple of Dublin shapes that have really piqued my interest.

This one combines both. Excellent job, O.

Cool

Thanks!

Nope, this pipe didn't quite meet the standard I've set to enter the contest. I'll be working on another in the next few weeks.

Yeah I'm having the same problem. The smallest little flaw and I just hang my head. I've set my standard as I want it to be a pipe that someone would pay what you will get (seems to average $600-$700 for each winning carver of the set) without hesitation. I was just looking on the website and didn't find a registration link. How do I go about registering?

This is a good looking pipe. Here's what I like and don't like about it.

Like
The proportion of the shank is good.
The button looks comfortable.
The overall proportions look right.

Don't like
The bell of the bowl is off. In compensating for the skinny shank you've got the proportions wrong somewhere between halfway down the bowl and where it meets the shank. It looks a little flabby. This is compounded by the shank to bowl transition. This doesn't flow, and the effect it gives makes it look like two separate pieces of briar have been mated. Note the abrupt line on the top of the shank where it mates to the bowl. This transition doesn't flow, it calls attention to itself.

I've seen some hideous pipes posted here. This isn't one. I like the pipe. It looks like a pipe from someone talented who is still in the early part of their pipe making career and developing their skills. You got more right than wrong.

I agree with James. I thought the same thing. Maybe one of the best pipes I've seen you make. Nice work!
