PostSubject: Another dublin, last one for a while. Maybe :)    Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:15 am

So a couple months ago I had started working exclusively on dublin shapes trying to prepare for the Kansas pipe carving contest. I have fallen a little short. I didn't get any business cards made, nor do I have my website up yet Sad but I did get my stamp and I did make a couple of neat dublins. Well I finally(just now at 2:10am) completed my contest pipe and it will be sent out tomorrow morning. Oh wait it is morning Razz ok I need some sleep. I've got to be to work in 5 hours. Good night brothers and sisters and when you get a chance let me know what you think. Sorry for the terrible pics.

Laughing LaughingLaughing

That's so funny! I can relate 100%

In fact, I too am mailing off my contest entry this morning. It's my fourth attempt at a dublin for the contest. It still is pretty crappy, but much less so than the other three.

I think that is a fine looking pipe. I really like the stain and the grain pattern on that one. Looks like a magnificent smoker. What kind of wood did you use for the insert?

Thanks guys! And Jesse, it is spalted maple. Jesse I feel you bro, I made three and I actually have two unfinished on the bench and one is a freehand with a ton of plateau. It just didn't do it for me though. I know there is a lot of great carvers in this contest and it will be an honor just to have mine judged along with all of the others. I am not 100% satisfied either but when will I ever be Razz it was fun and I learned a lot and pushed my self hard for this. I wish you well Jesse. I know you will do great. That last pencil shank dublin you made was beautiful IMHO.

Thanks. I love the look of spalted maple. I really need to pick some up. You've done a good job on this one. It definitely made me look twice. It's a really nice pipe.

Looking at last year's entries, I know that I only have a snowball's chance in hell of placing, but the opportunity is fun.

Are you going to be at the show?

I wish! Ohio is a long haul with three kids and a wife :/ I'll definitely be at the Columbus show with some pipes but unfortunately things are tied up with my family and work for now.

A beauty. I think it must be harder to carve a bent Dublin and retain the strrrretched look that seems to me to be part of the design. But yours certainly pulls it off. It gives me the feeling of a Pete 999 design which flows in a pleasing way that doesn't seem at all forced. (If only Pete would NOT add those Father's Day or whatever bands that just breaks the flow in half.)

Nice pipe! That may be the best I've seen come from your shop yet, in my opinion. I really like the curves you've got going there.

It's pretty sweet.
Shape, grain, and color all work very nicely together.

Thank you all again for the support, and I plan to keep making pipes as long as everyone likes what I'm making. You all give me, as well as many others that have embarked on the pipe makers journey, the courage and confidence it takes to keep on making them.

Well I'm a little bummed, but never discouraged. I talked to Quinton and he said that my pipe did not make the set. He did say that it was a beautiful pipe and the only thing he noticed not in my favor was the bowl coating was still tacky. I used the honey, water, and activated charcoal and I believe either the fact that I did it within 12 hours of packaging and sending it out, the humidity, or an inaccurate ratio of honey and water kept it from fully curing in time. Lesson learned. Don't coat chambers unless requested by customer, and give yourself plenty of time to finish your pipe. I posted a big congratulations too the seven talented carvers,
Adam Davidson, Permal Chheda, Maigurs Knets, Matt Brannon, Micah Crydee, David Huber, and Jerry Crawford.

Don't get discouraged. I saw your little pipe and liked it quite a bit! There were a lot of excellent carvers that didn't make it this year. Just keep pluggin' away. You're making some nice stuff!

That would have been my number one. I love you  Didn't see the others, but I can pretty much anticipate what they were as far as design, size, &c. -- same old same old.
