PostSubject: "Waving" at jerkwad symbolism   Tue Jul 23, 2013 9:46 am

I recently received an email from NASA reminding me about the (then) upcoming photograph that the Cassini spacecraft was fixing to take on July 19 a shot of the Earth taken from behind Saturn's rings. Well, the photo shoot happened, and the result is depicted below.

The NASA email encouraged its recipients to go outside and wave at the camera at the time the photo was taken typical of the kind of idiotic symbolism that seems to pervade so much of state-sponsored "science".

Nevertheless, a gesture in keeping with their suggestion was appropriate. If you look very closely at Earth (indicated by the arrow in the photo), squint your eyes, and hold your mouth in just the right way, you can just barely see me "waving" at NASA using a hand gesture in which a certain finger is prominent. Twisted Evil

I know the area quite well, having been there many times in my hallucinations. Pipe smoking there is a bitch, if memory serves--just in case anyone gets ideas.

?

Let's just say that apparently our senses of humor are worlds apart, to the extent that either one of us actually has one.

As interest with humans seems to be internalizing rather than externalizing (you know, out into space) I can't see it a bad idea to keep NASA relevant and face-above-surface to include cutesy crap. People are no longer wondering what's beyond our world, and would rather be "little universes" in their own right.

You can see my middle finger expressing my views if you stand on your head, squint your eyes, and look closely at earth in the picture...remember the scotch. Cool

This isn't something I'd have a strong opinion on either way. But I agree with i.keenum that they were probably just trying to be cute. Without knowing a terrible lot about NASA's state of affairs, but knowing a little about marketing, I'd say they were just trying to make people who would otherwise have no connection with the space program, feel a bit more a part of things.

Some people enjoy being able to say things like, "hey when that pic was taken, I was waving, or I was mooning the camera", or whatever.

PS. I think I blinked...Think we can get the pic taken again???

That was actually Kaiser. The big thing you see bouncing around is the giant pipe Sasquatch carved for him, obviously. Laughing
