PostSubject: WHAT DO YOU COLLECT OTHER THEN TOBACCO & PIPES   Fri Aug 16, 2013 10:30 am

Always wondering if there are folks out there like me, yeah I know scary thought isn't it.
I've collected many things over the years including enemies but, need I digress.
I reckon I started pretty early collecting record albums, vinyl they call it nowadays then got interested in antiques and vintage items of all sorts. Salt and pepper shakers, glassware, pottery, you name it, if it was used back in the day I probably had at least one. But the big one for me was electrical apparatuses such as small appliances, clocks, radios, telephones fans, anything that plugged into the wall so to speak. Had a extra bedroom filled with Sunbeam appliances from the teens to the 40's for a few years and phones from the 20's to the 40's all through the house, hooked up and working of course and a kitchen fully equipped with the appliances of the 30's that were used on a regular basis. Use to wake up in the morning and have my coffee listening to a 40's radio. I had even made sure lighting including wall switches were of the time period. Now I have just a few remnants of all of it here and there through the house, sorta like small collections. I use get some strange looks and laughs as friends walked into the house. I remember one time a stranger needed to use the phone and I offered him in. He took one look at the phone and hesitated for a bit then asked me how to use it. I laughed and showed him he had to dial it with his finger, strange in deed someone hadn't seen a phone with a dial, it was what I grew up with and I aint as old as Ken. So away, now ya know what I collect or hoard, what's yours?

First, I must say that I am kind of envious that you had so much functioning appliances from that period. I'm a huge fan of the American yesteryear and that's some neat stuff to me cheers

It's good to know you kept some of it though, Cart! Cool collection, brother.

I myself collect modern trick YoYos. These are made of aluminum alloy and have always entertained me for hours. I don't have any recent pictures of my collection, but this here is one of my favorites and is exactly one of the "throws(as they are also called)" that I own.

Other than that, I used to collect guitars and bass guitars when I was still big into playing locally. At the height of my collection I had: Ibanez Artist Series 300 with Caiman skin type finish. Washburn X-Series 7 String, Jackson Flying V with Floyd Rose, B.C. Rich Warlock, Carlo Robelli 5-string Bass, First Act 4-String, Ibanez 4string, and various offbrand acoustics.

Now I only have the Ibanez, Washburn, Carlo Robelli and my Esteban acoustic with green confederate flag graphic on the front. I'd like to get some new combo amps as well.

Other than that, I just collect music. Sometimes dust if I've been lazy and forgot to clean up the house Laughing

I have been collecting lint...and dust..and furballs.

Seriously, other than a few pipes and a few antiques that my mother left me, the only thing I have been collecting is commercial kitchen ware that I use daily in cooking.  A lot of old Iron skillets and an iron pot given to me by Marie Houston.....black sheep granddaughter of Sam Houston.  She had a small 10 acre homestead all overgrown in downtown Coconut Grove...worth at last estimate at 2 million per acre.  She was a recluse who lived in a mansion built by the same architect and at the same time as Viscaya (John Deering Estate as in John Deer Tractors).

A little bit of history of old Miami.  She even had a longboat used by pirates down by a spring that gushed fresh water in a small pool on her property...found gold dubloons (sp) under the longboat.  The property was stolen by her attorney (of course) and later sold for 22 million dollars (after she passed...the bastard).

Sorry about the departure from the thread.

Knives, apparently willy-nilly. It was never my intent. Nevertheless, I have a drawer full of mostly pocket knives that I'll never use. Stupid, in my estimation, but KAD is gaining ascendency just as my PAD is almost under control. Fortunately, I found PAD to be self-limiting, to a degree, when I realized I was buying virtual duplicates of what I like and already had. Perhaps KAD will work out the same.

Other than that, I'm free of the collector bug, with the exception of gathering wool, usually while smoking a decent English.

I collect yarn and fiber to spin. Occasionally I have even been known to knit and spin with it. Occasionally. Also, there is my small nail polish, ahem, habit. I have over 200 bottles.

Well, It seems I have  somethings in common with a few of you or vise versa.
I too use to collect Yo-Yo's as you Draagha and carried one of course I was a lot younger then. All Duncan's, Imperials, Butterfly's Glow in the Dark etc. even still have a couple left hidden in a draw. I got pretty good with them, at least I stopped hitting myself in the face with one. LOL! Could never afford to collect guitars though, even when I worked for Rickenbacker but, would have like to.

pepesdad1, I also am a avid dust collector seeing I don't move to fast anymore nor am much able to clean all the time as I should.
But Cast Iron is a big collectable, used to have quite a bunch and still do. From Griswold frying pans to waffles, muffin pans, pots, you know what I mean. Takes a healthy arm to heave those around but, there the best to cook on as far as I'm concerned.
And don't worry about getting off the beaten path, I constantly do it. It's age and dementia. So they tell me. Besides I enjoyed the story.

And Richard, I have a stash of pocket knives myself, not really a collection only about 8 or 10. I use to pick them up anytime I ran across them used. I've only bought 3 my whole life new. A Gerber, Schrade (old timer) and a Buck. I like'em and use to change the one I carried ever so often. Nowadays I just keep the one Case and it suits me fine and use it quite often.

Briarbabe, Well, I don't collect yarn nor thread and haven't done any spinning since I quit drinking but, I DO have a daughter who collects Nail Polish. Every Christmas or there a bouts I buy her a 60 or 90 nail polish rack. Don't really know how many she really has nowadays but, I know it's a lot for nail polish. She even had a few YouTube videos going there for awhile on Nail Polish but, I'm unsure if she's still doing them.

Hope you all didn't mine me answering all your posts like this, I just found it easier instead of "quoting" everyone's reply.

Do me a favor and ask her what her YouTube name is for her videos. Chances are, I've watched her tutorials.

The only thing pepesdad1 collects besides dust is mold :twisted:I however collect several worth while objects.Razz

Pens and pocket knives. Have about 200.

Glass ships in a bottle. I have about a dozen of those. Would like about a dozen more.

My favorite collection is my handguns. I won't say how many but I've got some nice ones with my favorite being a gun I carried daily for over 30 years. A custom Colt Government Model Mark IV Series 70 .45ACP cal. in a hard brushed chrome finish with lazer sights. Deadly accurate and always loaded.

I kid Walt all the time. He's my friend and gives as good as he gets. I've been on his case all day and this afforded me another chance to get a dig in. Besides he is old as dirt and need someone to get him moving around some. Breath once in awhile Walt so we will know you're still alive. Laughing

AJ, Fountain pens I presume, I like'em too but, again another I can't afford to collect, I got a couple that don't work LOL! But, most things I like I can't afford including pipes. Just a poor man in a rich mans hobby again.
I tried collecting firearms one time and found that a neighbor wanted them more then I. Got all of them and cash and, suddenly moved. I was an over the road truck driver so he knew I wouldn't be back soon. Now I just have my 45 Colt revolver, a shotgun and a 22 rifle and I'm ALWAYS home and there always loaded. Unloaded gun is like a hammer without a head.
I don't know Walt well but, he seems to be a good man with a real good sense of humor. Wish more people were like him.

Did I say that right Walt? I couldn't remember exactly what you told me to say.

Walt is a good man and we do need more like the old boy. We share many of the same philosophies about a great many things as I suspect you and I do. He's a true friend and you don't need to look behind to see if he's there if he's needed. A man of his word.

I know Walt didn't tell you what to tell me. He put his dentures in upside down this morning and bit his head off. He's been PO'd all day because all he can do is mumble and grumble. Wait a minute. That's what he does all the time anyway.Rolling Eyes

Hell, we all collect scars, I bet I've got more scars then I've got pipes. And more then 90% of them were self inflicted. No, no I'm not a cutter, just clumsy.

FM, When I was able to get around to sales and such I'd always come home with a box full. Use to really love it getting out early in the morn and hitting some old barns and garage sales. Use to find some great and useful stuff. But nowadays most the junk ya find is toys, clothes and electronic crap, wasn't worth anything new and sure as hell aint worth nothing now.
There'll be nothing left of the 21st century for anyone to collect, cherish or build a museum for because it'll all turn to dust except for the worthless plastic and toxic waste it leaves behind.
See Walt, I go off on a tangent from time to time too LOL!

Not a collector in the strict sense. Just have a few interests that seem to consume my energy and time, away from my career. They get proper attention in their own time and way-

Music
Pipes and 'baccy (duh)

Cheers,

I don't consider it collecting, but I tend to buy just about every new ultra-lightweight backing thingamabob they come out with.  I've got almost 50 different packing stoves, enough titanium pots to outfit a major restaurant, more sleeping bags, pads, packs, boots than I will ever use in my life.  The list goes on and on.

Every time I see a new something that is 1/2 ounce lighter than the one I have, and look, it has a bottle opener and emergency canoe paddle built into it, I've just gotta have it.  My basement is filled with this stuff that after using it once, I realize it's crap, and my old whatever, works better.

Sometimes I think there are companies that think up and make this junk, knowing that there are few thousand fools like me, enough for them to turn a profit before the market for it crashes.   I hate this crass capitalism, but I sure support it as well.Rolling Eyes

Natch, I think your on to something there my friend. I do believe garbage is made just to sell and not do anyone any good except for the people marketing the crap. It's a greedy little world we live in and there's a race to see who can get most of it.
I don't nor never have bought the needless new fangled gadgets. Oh, I own a used 15 year old digital camera cause I have a good use for it but only because film cameras are pretty useless nowadays. I have a PC that I built out of old computers but, no cell phone or any of those other gadgets that everyone seems to be nuts about. Heck 85% of my music is on either album, 8 track or cassette with a few CD's and I hear there outdated already. I live in the stone age for the most part and enjoy it. The only things I buy new is food (hate to see what used looks like), sometimes clothes when needed, occasionally a pipe when I can afford it and ammo because I'm too lazy to reload. Oh! and gasoline because I haven't a clue how to refine it. I never even purchased a new vehicle, the newest vehicle I've ever owned is a 80 pickup and before that it was a 76 Eldorado. The old stuff is just as good and most the time better then the new if one will just take care of it. Hell, I use to dig things out of the trash, bring them home, repair them with little effort most the time and then use them for 10 more years. People throw more money away nowadays then what I spend in a life time. Okay, I'm off on a rant again so I'll end this now.

I collect Tiki mugs and other Polynesiana... one of those novelties that just got out of hand. It makes for fun cookouts.

I'm also a bit of a clothes horse. For a long while I either justified it as a practical need, or browbeat myself for dandyism. Now I realize it's just another form of collecting, just one with an unusual cultural role. And as some wise men once wrote, every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man...

Nothing wrong with looking your best sir we all have our own priorities. Mine has never been slacks and ties or even shaving but, that's just me. As much trouble as I have with women folk I reckon I just figure not even fancy duds could help me, LOL!
