PostSubject: (IMPROVED) RADICE TWIN BORE RESTORATION   Thu Aug 29, 2013 10:54 am

Just got me a Radice Clear Twin Bore Hawkbill that I've been wanting for some time now.
I got this one real reasonable because someone tried to change the twin bore at the button to a slot for some reason. Normally I wouldn't have even though about purchasing it because of the modification but, it intrigued me to see if I could restore it back.
Well, a little filling, filing, sanding and buffing I think I got back to almost original, I'll have to do some minor touch up on it but, I think all and all it came out pretty good. Here's a photo before and afters. All that had to be done to the stummel was to wax and buff. Although as I see in the photo I should go back and sand the cake down just a bit. Anyway, here it be.
EDIT: I added a new photo showing the touch up work to the twin bore holes, I think it's much better now.

Improved bore holes 8/31/13

Nice work. Send it my way for a solid break-in. The benefit will be that when I return it you can do your second restore on it.

That's who those twin bores were designed for. And, you were correct once-upon-a-time before an oral surgeon permanently corrected that flaw. Before that the local shop kept me in stem replacement poverty.

Outstanding work Ron....good looking pipe!
Remember those twin bores from the 60's.  Strictly for stem chewers...still kept the slim feel in the mouthpiece.

Great birdseye on the bottom!!

Thanks guys. I'm doing some touch up work on it now and hope I can get it to look a lot better. Every time I look at the photo I cringe, it needs to be better.

The artist/craftsman is always toughest on their own work. That is an amazing restoration on that stem and a very sharp pipe overall.

Thank you sir for your kind words. Yes, I'm a anal perfectionist that can't seem to reach perfect and it grips me to no end.

Vast improvement Ron, I take it you're using black super to build the stem ports back up!

Thank you kirk, Yes and no. I use an epoxy to build that up because of the depth involved.
Super glue would have taken way too many coats to build it up enough. But, I did use it in the last fraction to give it color and to have something to polish.

Your drive and attention to detail is nothing short of admirable Buddy, I am always greatly impressed with your restoration work, I've never worked with Epoxy so it's all a bit of a mystery to me.

Thank you sir your too kind, Epoxy it's just a two part glue, catalyst (hardener) and glue plainly. Mix equal amounts of each and apply it. Easy Peasey, Japanesey!

Very nice pipe and restoration. I have a twin bore Trypis. I thought the idea behind the twin boire was to deliver more taste and a cooler smoke. I'd say mine (usually / almost always) does that. I hope yours does, too.

Great restoration Ron. It looks like new compared to the mess the original owner did to the stem.
As for the Radice Twin Bore pipes, they were made primarily to deliver a smooth and cooler smoke from all that I have read. They were not designed to be a dental or bite proof stem like the older Kaywoodie stem biters and others but the design actually works well for both reasons IMO.
A fine pipe and restoration to be proud of Ron. cheers
